Cheryl's Story

Life Got married in senior yr. Lasted 23 yrs. Married a great guy in 1985 who died 13 yrs later.--very rough time, obviously. Amazingly enough, Bill Suggs & I met up in 2014 on Facebook, having not seen each other since duPont except for 2 dances at our 50th reunion. Can you say Ultimate Love of Our Lives? Who would have guessed? Totally out of the blue at age 70! I've been lucky in love in my life. We got married January 4, 2015!!! Moved to Hayesville, NC IN July, 2015. Got a beautiful place just out of town with great views of the mountains & Lake Chatuge. AWESOME! We were in bluegrass banjo & guitar, & I got an upright bass. DANCING (he was a dancing fool). He died of a massive heart attack one yr nine months after we married. Im a retired esthetician (give facials and like that). My son was an elec. design eng. with Texas Instruments for 35 yrs. Now retired and back in Mandarin. He had the 3rd edition of a textbook published February 2023. Wrote a sci-fi role playing game book for a game he designed. He has written a collection of short stories & a few novels. In September, 2014, I adopted my step-daughter of 30 years--she wanted me for her "real" mom! She was 67 yrs old & I was 69! If we challenge, she'll go in Guiness as the world's oldest adoptee. I'm still a voracious reader. I'm now also writing. My best memories of duPont are of the band; Bill Swor. And you guys who weren't in Projectionist Club just don't know what you missed! UPDATE: My Bill (Bill Suggs) died 9/11/2016. We were driving through Wyoming on our way to an elk hunt in Idaho/Montana. He had a massive heart attack while driving--my Bill, incredibly fit. Worked out daily, walked our mountain daily with a 45 lb. backpack. Rode his bike 12 miles a day. I was seriously injured with spinal injuries, but though it will take months, I will heal. I was lucky to have no paralysis. Bill & I had 2 1/2 years together & were married for 1 year, 9 months. He spoiled me outrageously. It wasn't nearly long enough, but at least we had each other. There will never be another. Bill was the most honorable man I've ever known and the most patriotic--not to mention the all time best dancer & sexiest! Our class just lost one of our best--to...Expand for more
me, the best--classmate we had. Next time around Bill & I will get together sooner. My best friends would tell you I'm caring, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as intimidating. If I won $100 million, I'd give some of it to family, friends, & specific charities and save the rest for future security...I have everything I need & can't think of a thing I want that Bill hasn't thought of first! This story wizard question asks if I have a hero. I'd have to say that my grandmother was my heroine. One very tough lady. Could love without conditions and endure anything. My Granny got me through my late husband's illness. When I was so exhausted I couldn't move I'd think of Granny & know that she could do this. If Granny could, I could and no one would ever say that Granny was a tougher lady than I. Thank you, Granny. My mother's determination to recover from her wreck in 1949 gave me the knowledge of what could be endured when I was severely injured Sept. 11, 2016 when Bill died behind the wheel. Bill Swor, our band leader, was my hero. He taught me discipline, loyalty, faith in a person, that anything is possible if you want it badly enough & are willing to work really, really hard. He showed me how to parent. I raised my son the way Bill raised us in the band. (Poor kid) The "story wizard" wants to know how I hope old friends remember me. Ha. Ha. Well, let's see. I know that Roland McKenny remembers me as being, shall we say, "precocious", and dating "100 yr. old men"!! He also referred to me as, "Charlie". I personally remember Roland as being one of my best buddies starting at Loretto. I hope people remember me for standing for what was right, no matter the situation. For speaking my mind, standing for my beliefs, standing for those who couldn't stand for themselves, unafraid, & for being my own person regardless of what was popular at the time. Can't say I've changed much. Update: August, 2023 Still widowed. Still single. Am a competitive ballroom dancer. My son retired from Texas Instruments last year & now lives in Mandarin. I split my week between my place in Five Points & his place. Living the good life. Wouldn’t mind having a guy again, but I don’t NEED one.
