Chris's Story
Julie Sanderson and I have been happily married for 50 years. We have three wonderful kids and five perfect grandkids. We moved to NC 20 years ago for Julie's job (fitness coordinator for Granville County Senior Center).
After graduating from Oakland University with a B.A. in Philosophy in 1971, I started grad school in Philosophy at MSU. I promptly dropped out and went to work as music critic, featured writer, and columnist with the Lansing State Journal. In 1991, I entered the graduate program in Written Communication at EMU and earned an MA in English. In 1999 I got into the NC TEACH program at North Carolina Central,. Then I began teaching middle school, where I went to school in more ways than one every day.
I spent six years as a middle-school Language Arts teacher. I taught 6th, 7th, AND 8th-grade AIG(academically and intellectually gifted)students only. I loved this arrangement, but it was a tremendous amount of work, and my last year I had a principal whose idea of education was way different from mine. You can read an essay by me describing teaching poetry to my kids, as well as a poem by me in the Winter '05 issue of the Oakland University Journal, available online.
I switched from middle school to being a full-time English instructor for Vance-Granville Community College, where I had taught part-time classes in the past. It also had three satellite campuses, plus a large Federal prison program (there's a big complex of five facilities near here). The last is where I was for four years. I taught at a Federal prison camp, an FCI, a medical facility, and a low-security prison. I liked it well enough, as I did teaching for a couple years at the Scott Correctional Facility in Wayne County. That was all women, however; this was all men. All of my prison students were more motivated and (literally) under control than middle-school kids.
The prison program lost its funding, so I am now teaching on the main campus. It's nice to have an office, and the campu...Expand for more
s really is lovely. This definitely feels more like being a real college teacher.
I maintain an active writing "career." I have published a children's book, two books for young adults, a memoir of growing up as a baby boomer in Oakland County--Growing Up in Boom Times-- and a book of poetry--I Used To Be Old--all available on my web site on wix.com. or Amazon.com My most recent book is What to Think About: Philosophy for a Thoughtful Younger Generation. I also have published a ton of magazine and newspaper articles. See my "On Hearing Beethoven's Fifth Symphony for the 99th Time" in Spring '08 Oakland Journal and my "Rach Three Rocks Meadowbrook" in the Winter '09 Oakland Journal. I began my "Real Poetry for Real People" Facebook page in 2015. I subsequently have posted a new original poem by me every week. Check it out!
Julie and I bought (Fall 2013) a second house in St. Joseph, MI, where we will retire soon. Julie retired in September 2018, and I retired at the end of 2018. Finally!
Praise for Growing Up in Boom Times":
"Growing Up in Boom Times," by Chris Brockman is now available for purchase. Check out our page on Facebook!
I LOVE THE BOOK. It brought back nothing but good, happy memories of a happy childhood. . . You have shared with the world how childhood needn't be filled with expensive toys to be some of the happiest memories of your life.

I found myself looking forward to the times that I could spend getting away from my day-to-day work related responsibilities to tag along with you as you shared your experiences in this wonderfully structured guided tour of the Boom Times.

Brockman has hit the high notes for baby boomers, from family dinners to long forgotten TV shows. His relationship with Michigan's nature is a great touch! If you are a boomer, open a Faygo pop, sit back and enjoy.
