Life I decided to become a writer during high school when I worked on the school newspaper. After high school, I spent a year in France as a foreign exchange student and later attended seven different schools from California to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Early on I wrote and published magazine stories about my adventures including riding a bicycle 1,000 miles down the newly opened Baja California highway and crewing on a 44-foot sailboat throughout the islands of the South Pacific to New Zealand and back. My cruising partner Jim and I married in 1978, and we sailed from Hawaii back to California and spent three years building a 55-foot custom sailing yacht. We then sailed down through the Panama Canal to St. Thomas where we started a yacht charter business, and I received my 100-ton Captain’s License.
