Chris's Story

Life Life is good. I have had my share of up and downs, but I will say my life has improved with age. I moved away from Seattle in 1987 and have not moved back. I pass through Seattle once a month on business and to see my Siblings and that is about it. I have 5 great kids, Nicole, Adam, Michael, Janessa & Emily, two of which are in Pre-Med at MSU and another who just joined the Air Force and hopes to work in the Space Command. I have a great wife. Who knew I would have to find a Swedish woman in California when I grew up in Ballard??? I am content but there is so much more to do... School I started Kindergarten in Brentwood, California. I stayed at the same school through the 5th Grade. Then my parents divorced and I was ripped out of the school of my youth, leaving my earliest friends behind. Todd Gordon, Susan Anderson and Kimberly, where are you my friends??? Then my Mom places me into St. ALs in Ballard. I was thrown into a single room class with a bunch of kids that grew up with each other. I was always the outsider. I had a few genuine friends but I never fit in there. The only highlight was the constant beatings with a yardstick by the Nuns and trying to understand the alcoholic priest. That is probably why I like watching Penguin movies so much. I found the hypocrisy of going to a Catholic school when your parents have been banned from the Sacraments for being divorced hilarious. A shout out to James, Eric and Tony. M.Z. was a punk. I had a crush on TR and was completely taken aback by you, TV Girl. So then I was on to James Monroe and I must say, life was getting better. Monroe was fresh ground made up of elementary schools within Ballard so it was a good mix. Despite the fact I was given the nick name Greaser, I was getting along fine. I had many friends and was crazy about SC, which lasted through High School. Rick Jones, where are you my friend? Oh yea, I forgot to mention, I had a major learning disability,...Expand for more
but who knew at the time? Teachers throughout school always had the kindest and most encouraging words to say to me like I was LAZY. That I was A LOSER who would NEVER AMOUNT TO ANYTHING. This was such positive reinforcement for an adolescent youth who was actually quite gifted. I was off the charts, but I was just a kid who did not apply myself and could not have paid attention if I had owned a bank. On to Ballard HS. First, do you remember when they started bussing our Ballard brothers and Sisters off to Franklin HS? That really sucked plus it spread out the Norwegian and Swedish Mafia. I heard someone from Ballard was arrested for smuggling Lutfisk south of the Ship Canal. My mom and I attended a hearing and I was spared, thank God. Anyway, the only good thing that had a positive effect on my life at BHS was the encouragement of one teacher. Our own Mr. Holland, Earl Kelly. If you knew him, I don't have to say any more. I was pretty much a loner and did not fit into any specific demographic. I lettered in track but was not a jock. I hung with the stoners but did not smoke dope. I had breakfast with the nerds but did not play Dungeons and Dragons. I was a friend to all and did not discriminate. Most of the students I knew in school were good people. A shout out to Jack L, Laura G and Jeff B. I was bored with school. I started working for the Seattle News Media as a photographer and stringer and immersed myself in Search and Rescue. Would I like to go back in time with what I know now to have a different school experience? Sure. But would I give up all of my life experiences, good and bad, that have shaped the character of the man writing this today. NEVER. I am not griping, just telling the truth. Workplace I am doing OK. My business partners and I are involved in concert productions, filmmaking, VC consulting and a full range of internet projects. Military I can't talk about it. I could tell you, but then you know...
