ng after high school. In 1972 I started work in the US House of
Representatives, on Committee staff and on as a press secretary for a Congressman from Florida...stayed in
the House for 10 years, then did four more years in the Senate, on the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, then the
Senate Armed Services Committee. Became a Reagan appointee in 1984, and completed four years of work for Mr.
Reagan and four more for the first President Bush. Left government for a few years in the mid-'90s, then was
brought back to serve in the Senate on the Gulf War Special Investigation Unit of the Senate Veterans Committee. Left
the Hill and was hired by the Department of Defense for its Gulf War office -- retired briefly and ran a
small chain of magazines. Was called back to federal service in 2001 by Secretary of Veterans Affairs Tony Principi. I've been at VA since then, speechwriting for the next three secretaries.
I married Carolyn, "the girl next door," in 1971 and we're still going strong!
We've got three great children, two girls, ages 27 and 23, and a son, age 25.
