Chris's Story

Dear Friends, My entire career has been in post-secondary education. I am currently President of Hudson County Community College (HCCC) in Jersey City, NJ. Located next to the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan, Hudson County is one of the most densely populated and diverse counties in the United States. HCCC is a leading institution in New Jersey and is nationally recognized for providing upward social mobility for its students, one-third of whom were born outside of the United States representing, collectively, 119 different countries. HCCC serves over 18,000 students annually and employs over 1,000 faculty and staff. Previously I served as President of Community College of Beaver County, near Pittsburgh, and my earlier career included years of working with wonderful people at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Penn State Erie/The Behrend College, and Lakeland Community College near Cleveland, OH. I had a phenomenal undergraduate experience at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, where I developed a passion for learning that eventually led to a Ph.D. and a 40-year career in higher education. I am inspired every day in my work and my personal life. I have two beautiful children, Jonathan Reber (age 24) and Katherine Reber (age 22). Jonathan loves the outdoors and is an expert fly fisherman. Katherine is finishing her senior year at Kenyon College (OH), majoring in English and Theatre. It's fun taking her to Broadway plays when she visits us at our home near New York City. My interest in politics that began in fifth grade at Mount Rose Elementary School, during the 1968 presidential election, has never diminished although I believe that my eventual decision not to pursue a political career was a wise one for me. work in the profession of education, which is life-changing and transformational. Nothing brings me greater joy than watching students succeed and feeling a personal sense of satisfaction that comes with the opportunity to be involved in their educational and life journeys. My greatest regret in life is that when I was a teenager I lacked the courage to admit to myself, let alone others, that I was gay. Many years later, I gained the confidence to acknowledge and share my truth with my family, including my kids and their wonderful mother, my coworkers, friends and eventually the larger community. I am blessed to have been accepted by others, including those I hurt over the years, and today I am living authentically with my beautiful husband, Kerry Stetler, who grew up a block away from me in York, PA, and attended Violet Hill Elementary School, Mount Rose Elementary School, and York Suburban Junior High and High Schools with me. I never would have imagined the phenomenal societal change that has occurred in recent years toward acceptance and understanding of the LGBTQ community, but much remains to be done. While I don't choose to bring visibility to my sexual orientation, I also don't hide from it and try to be a mentor and role model for others who struggle with their identify and the challenge and angst of sharing their truth. I was fortunate to have loving parents and I have many happy childhood memories. I also have painful memories as the victim of periodic bullying in junior high and high school, but I have long ago forgiven those who treated me badly. Today I am very happy and would love to hear from others with whom I have lost contact over the years. I wish everyone all the best and genuine happiness! Sincerely, Chris Reber
