Christine's Story
I grew up in the 50s, in Washington Heights - uptown in NYC - 191st Street, between St. Nicholas and Audubon Aves. It was great as a adolescent, as I was mobile, having access to great public transportation. You could get to the beach in Rockaway for something like 30 cents!
We lived in a 2 bedroom apartment, me, 2 sisters, parents, and my mom's sister. Crowded??? YES, but my folks figured out how to make the dining room the living room and the LR their bedroom, but there still was only 1 bathroom and 5 females.
I had one friend who had a tremendous impact on my life - Linda Hettling. She lived on 192nd. She introduced me to MOMA and the interesting aspects of modern art. We also christmas shopped at B Altman's - where her aunt worked. I wonder whatever happened to Linda? And Barbara Pivorotto (sp?) who I bicycled with??? and Marilyn Kelleher, where I recall sleep-overs on a few rainy Friday nights.
Sadly...Expand for more
for me, my parents wanted to move out of the city, and finally found a house in Whippany NJ. The sadly part was because I already was in high school, taking the subway with 1 change of trains, down to 34th. My HS was on 33 at 9th and 10th avenues - garment district. In moving to suburbia, I had to dig up roots, and didn't drive (why would you in Manhattan?). It was difficult.
I moved again after graduation WPHS, going to college at the U of Delaware and moved to suburban Philadelphia for my first job after college. I also moved a year later, back to NJ, for graduate school at the then New Jersey Medical School and 4 years after that, moved to Rochester NY for postdoctoral work at the U of Rochester!!! and then to Cleveland OHIO greater
metro area, where I have remained for 23 years.
I've been a scientist my whole life and now work for a company in NJ, near my parents former home - Novartis. I am loving it!
