Mark's Story
Life
Have been lucky in life. Married to Arlene (from East Detroit) for 31+ years. No kids. Have enjoyed hobbies of astronomy and model-building (some folks never grow up)over past few years. Otherwise, gardening and biking for fun. A quite, normal, life.
School
Finished at Franklin in 1965.
Had a good time of it despite being a nerd.
College
Started at Wayne State in physics and mathematics right after finishing at Franklin. Finished BS in 1969.
Went on to Purdue for MS in physics, finished in 1970.
At Wayne, got PhD in mathematics 1975.
Workplace
Just couldn't stay away from academia, so I got an assistant professorship at Georgia Tech in mathematics in 1975. Got promoted to associate in 1980, tenure and all. Arlene and I enjoyed Atlanta but had a hankering to change jobs, she with Burrou...Expand for more
ghs and me at GA Tech.
Left Georgia Tech in 1984 to head back north, where Arlene got a nice promotion with Burroughs and I switched over to industry at Northrop Corp. Funny thing is, the plant I worked at was actually Hallicrafters Radio (the Franklin HS Radio Club members will get it). Hallicrafters name plate was on my first bookcase in my first office. Northrop had bought them in 1973.
After starting in software as an algorithm designer for real-time systems (a natural place for a math-type with a physics background) I ended up as director of software and then, before leaving, as VP of Engineering, in 1996. I left Northrop (usual Merger and Acquisition stuff) in 1999 and struck out on my own as a free-lancer.
Have enjoyed doing the self-employeed thing but getting ready to really retire in 2006.
