Christina's Story

Life Three weeks after graduation, I departed for West Point... and I'm STILL in the Army. I am now a Major and should be promoted to Lieutenant Colonel next year. I am currently working as an Interagency Strategist at US Joint Forces Command in Suffolk, VA. I'm trying to fix the US Government, so be patient. My other assignments included duty stations at Fort Bragg, Fort Gordon, and Germany (where we traveled all over Europe - UK, France, Czech Rep, Belgium, and more) as a Signal Officer, and a tour as an Assistant Professor of Comparative Politics back at West Point. The Army also paid for me to get my Master of International Affairs at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs in Manhattan before the teaching gig. I have not deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, as my current specialty is more of a big thinking job. I did deploy to Haiti in 1994 for a few months, and did some personal time in Bosnia and Croatia in the late 90s. I was married in early 1993 and inherited a 9 yo stepson in the package. My husband and I proceeded to have two children of our own - Duncan was born in Germany in 1999 and is now an 8 yo gifted 3rd grader. Caitlyn was born in New York in 2001 and is now a 6 yo gifted 1st grader. Alas, I separated from my husband when Caitlyn was only a few months old, so for the past 6 years, I've been doing the single parent with demanding career thing. Good thing I get lots of child support!!! (And a great support network helps, too!) The icing on the cake is that both kids have ADHD just like their mom, so life is interesting... I finished raising my stepson even after his dad left, and he is now a college graduate working in a recording studio and for a marketing company in New York, and most of all he is an aspiring musician with a band call Architect Fails. When he hits the big time, he says he's going to pay off my mortgage. :) We moved here to Virginia 2 years ago, and we immediately fell in lov...Expand for more
e with everything about the place. The Army has been kind enough to "homestead" me here for the remainder of my career, and in 4 1/2 years I will retire and take a job as a defense contractor making way more money. :) We bought our first house - a big, beautiful house - last year since we finally get to settle down. We have three cats - Henry, Sophie, and Razor - and a pet betta - Spike - who lives in my cubicle at work. We are active in our church - St. Paul's Catholic Church in Portsmouth, VA - where the kids attend religious formation, and I volunteer as an aide and am also the webmaster. We are also active in Scouting, with Duncan in Bears (Cub Scouts) this year, and Caitlyn in Brownies. I am the awards chair for the Cub Scout Pack and the Leader of the Brownie Troop. I do a little volunteer work for the PTA when I can. The kids also take swimming lessons at the Y, and if you recall I was an avid state champion swimmer - I still swim laps to stay in shape, especially since the Army has succeeded in causing the cartilege to disintegrate in both of my knees over the years. Caitlyn is an avid dancer, taking 3 hours of classes a week in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, and gymnastics, plus rehearsals for recitals and a non-competitive dance team. I know what your'e thinking - how did I get a girly girl? Don't know, but it's rather fun. We even did a major state pageant in July, and this ol' tomboy had a blast playing pageant mom and doing hair and quick changes. Duncan plays seasonal basketball but mostly he's into computers, legos, and chess, including tournament play. Aside from working, raising kids, and volunteering, I find time to enjoy photography like my dad (who died of ALS in 2003). Yes, we do find the occasional minute to relax, and every so many weeks I pass out cold for 14 hours straight - so much to do, so little time. My "business trips" to places like Istanbul, Guinea, and Haiti are kind of like mom's week out for me. :)
