J. Christina's Story

In case you're wondering, that is MY ABRHS 1967 yearbook up on Classmates - since I have no descendants to pass it down to. The photo I just posted shows Dr. Terumoto Koike, Yako's son, and me. We are having dinner and beer/cider at The Back Deck in Boston. Moto was visiting Mass General Hospital and observing surgeries until MGH closed to non-staff and he had to return home to Japan. I had last seen him when he was a kindergarten student in Niigata in 1982. I spent K-3 at Henry Ford School in Redwood City, CA; 4th & 6th grade at Ben Franklin School in Redwood City; 5th grade in Peninsula School in Menlo Park (in the 6th grade class cuz 5th was full), 7th grade at Goodwin Jr High in Redwood City; 8th-9th at Loyalsock Township Jr-Sr. High in Williamsport, PA; 10th grade at Concord-Carlisle HS in Concord, MA and 11th-12th grade at Acton Boxboro. Regional High School in Acton, MA. Just days after graduating from ABRHS in June 1968 I moved back to my native California. I earned a BA in Anthropology, an MA in Archaeology and a Certificate in TESL from UCLA. I spent three years in Tokyo, one was my junior year of college at International Christian University in Mitaka (University of California Education Abroad Program, 1970-71), and then I went back after grad school to teach ESL at 普連土学園 , Quaker girls school in Tokyo from 1974-76. I attended AFS sister (ABRHS 1967-68) Yako's wedding while I was there. She's a grandmother a few times over now. I've also hosted an AFS student from Greenland in 2002-2003 and have visited Greenland three times. Since 1989 I've been back in the Boston area, working as the anthropology and sociology librarian at BU. I expect to retire in 2023 and move to a cohousing community in Iowa City, Prairie Hill. I've been interested in cohousing for the past thirty years. There's a brand new cohousing community in Malden, but the prices for condos there are more than d...Expand for more
ouble what I am getting in Iowa City., Prairie Hill is the only cohousing community in Iowa. I visited in October/November 2021, after meeting some community members who were vacationing in Maine over the summer. I loved the people and the location. I do in fact have Iowa connections: my mother was a graduate of the University of Iowa and she grew up in Waterloo, where I still have an uncle and three cousins.. The community has about 8 acres, a common house, a fenced in community garden, and when my building (the last one) is completed next year, 37 households. It is multigenerational. I'll be living with people who like me, have spent time living in Japan, as well as people with Danish-American connections I can practice my fractured Danish on. Of course, retiring, selling my three-family house (a fixer upper). and moving 1200 miles is a lot of change. Activities over the past 30+ years in Boston have included volunteering on Thompson Island in Boston Harbor as a tour guide, volunteering with Boston Area Gleaners, and sharing my space with feline companions. Since 2008 I have been studying Danish, which is the second language of Greenland and the first language of some of my maternal ancestors. In 2014 I visited Denmark for the first time and visited some of the places where my great grandparents had lived. I enjoy cooking and baking, reading, and walking. I worked for seven years as an archaeologist for a consulting firm in San Diego but was laid off during the Reagan era and decided there was "no future in the past." I next taught ESL to SE Asian refugee adults in Stockton, California, then went to library school, graduating from San Jose State University in Dec. 1987. My first library job was at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and it gave me a home base for weekend trips to Bryce and Zion national parks. After fifteen months there I came here to Boston (after a 21 year absence).
