Christine's Story
In May, 2008, I had the great fortune of being one of 1,600 runners, from 43 different countries scattered across the globe, participating in the Great Wall of China marathon. What a blast! From the 1:30am wake-up call, to the 3 hour bus ride to Yin-Yang Square in the outlying countryside, to experiencing running on the famed Great Wall itself, to the successful completion of the race in less than the allotted time allowed, it was an experience I'll cherish always. i driver. En route to my hotel, he and I rode in silence for the first 20 minutes or so, due to the language barrier. Then, he put on a CD of English karaoke tunes, with the words showing up on a tv monitor mounted on the passenger's-side visor. The ride from there on, clear to the hotel--a good 30 minute ride farther-- found the two of us belting out karaoke tunes the whole way. Imagine singing Elvis in the back seat of a taxi in China with a heretofore total stranger. By the time we arrived at the hotel, we still couldn't communicate with words but, music being the universal language that it is, we had made a magical connection!
