Christopher's Story

Life After graduation from high School, Chris Butler enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended Naval Academy preparatory school in Newport, Rhode Island. He was commissioned in 1983 upon graduating with Honors from the U.S. Naval Academy with a BS in Systems Engineering. He was selected for the Nuclear Power Program, and attended Nuclear Power School, Nuclear Prototype Training,and Basic Submarine Officer School in Groton, CT. His 1st sea duty was December 1984 - 1988 onboard the Nuclear Powered Submarine USS POGY (SSN 647), where he was assigned as Main Propulsion Assistant, Damage Control Assistant, Assistant Operations Officer and Assistant Weapons Officer. 1988-1990 His 2nd assignment was with Commander Submarine Group Eight, Naples Italy, where he was assigned as the SSBN Plans and Operation Officer, and NATO Staff Watch Officer. In 1990, Commander Butler was selected to join the Navy’s meteorology and oceanography (METOC) community. 1990-1992 For his 1st METOC assignment he deployed globally as Operations Officer/Team Leader of the Mobile Environmental Team, on various warships. In July 1992, He attended the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Ca., earning his MS in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography. eturned to sea on the staff of Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group One (onboard USS CONSTELLATION CV-64), providing long range METOC operational and tactical analysis to the Battle Group during Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf deployments. March 1999 - Feb 2005, Commander Chris Butler was assigned as an Associate Director for Ocean, Atmosphere and Space S&T at the Office of Naval Research International Field Office (ONRIFO) in London, Leading a team of scientist to explore/assess new discoveries and inventions for future naval capabilities in over 40 countries across 5 continents. His awards include the Joint Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement medal,and various service medals. Commander Butler retired from 27 years of faithful service to country in Feb 2005, and is currently residing in Perth, Western Australia with his lovely wife Birgit, and his son Cian. He is an Adjunct Research Fellow with Curtin University of Technology Centre for Marine Science and Technology, Lectures Naval Architecture at the Universtiy of Western Australia, and consults for Tenix Defence Pty Ltd Marine Division on emerging shipbuilding technologies. Chris enjoys coaching wrestling for WWA Police & Citizens Youth Club in Fremantle, staying active in the S&T and Business community and is a member of the Australian American Association.
