Christopher's Story

Welcome to "My Story" -- which will sort be an ongoing project, since no one has the time to sit down and write what they've been up to for a quarter century in just an hour or so (unless they spent all that time in solitary confinement at a prison). Fortunately, I am among the BHS grads that 'kept a clean nose' (as Bob Dylan once sang), and stayed out of trouble. Even stayed in Boulder for ten years after our '83 graduation, before getting accepted into a Ph.D program in geology at the University of Calgary -- and off I went to Canada. Have nary looked back; been up here at about 52 degrees north latitude for 15 years now, got married to a Greek gal (from the prairies of Manitoba!), and now teach part-time at the U of C while working as a petroleum geologist downtown. Calgary and Houston (TX) are the two largest oil & gas cities in North America, and I'm of the mind that the one in Alberta, just a short drive from the Rocky Mountains, is the better of the two. (!) No offense to y'all who might be in Texas reading this ... As a lark, I've decided to (in addition to freelance writing) include some blah blah on each of the '30 Ideas' the kind folks at Classmates have provided -- should be fun. And maybe even shine some light on what I've been up to since that strange time in American history we call the early eighties ... HOW DO YOU HOPE YOUR FRIENDS REMEMBER YOU? As a fun-to-be-around, smart, honest guy. One who valued family and friends above all, and tried his best to make the world a better place (at least at the local grassroots level). I'd be happy if they remembered anything a'tall about me! I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A professional chef WHEN I GREW UP. MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS THOUGHT THAT WAS A fine & attainable IDEA. AS IT TURNED OUT, THEY WERE only partly correct (i do most of the cooking, and am not a bad preparer of Greek dishes; my bacon-wrapped chicken souvlaki is to die for, I've been told). But NO, I'm not a chef at a taverna ... HOW DO YOU BLOW OFF STEAM? DESCRIBE YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO RELAX. See how that damn built-in spell-check is indicating that I've incorrectly spelled "favorite" ?! There's a difference between Yankees and Canucks right there; British English versus "the other dialect" (!) ... And now you have an example of how I blow off steam, eh. ;o) WHAT'S THE WILDEST THING YOU EVER DID IN SCHOOL? Well, the climbs down in Eldorado Canyon and in the Colorado Rockies would definitely qualify. There were a few mountaineering-minded folks in our senior class, and we routinely risked life and limb on vertical rock with little regard for our well-being. I guess that's part of the myopia that comes with being young, eh. IF I'M GOING TO WORK SOMEWHERE, I NEED TO HAVE a large office, sane boss, AND a Starbucks London Fog tea TO BE ABLE TO DEAL WITH THE DAY-TO-DAY. DO YOU HAVE A HERO? TALK ABOUT WHERE YOUR INSPIRATION COMES FROM. That is one that could easily fill the 17,086 charact...Expand for more
ers I have remaining in this 'story'! Without a doubt, Alexander the Great ranks high on the list. He spread ideals we still, to this day, hold as true and self-evident -- all during the 4th century before Christ. Ghandi, because he proved that one can accomplish much through non-violent means. See, there's a contrast already: Alexander accomplished so much via his Macedonian military might, but Ghandi did so without an army and wearing only a simple hand-spun cloth robe. Maybe there's an example for us in there. Add to that, Bob Dylan. The bard. He changed 20th Century music, and the way we see the entire era. Enter the poet-songwriter. Speaking of poets, you might as well add my father -- Jack Collom -- to the list. He's a hero of mine. Has managed to carve out an entire lifetime career teaching and writing and publishing his work, without many literary critics even taking note. As per usual, his contribution will go relatively un-noticed until after he's gone; then all the Sons of Jacob & Esau will realize that Boulder had one of the greats in it's very midst and didn't even realize it. Lastly, Vasili Karavas (my late father-in-law). He was the model family man who sacrificed all the crazy ambitions that each & every man has in his inner soul (the kind of machinations that Alexander actually lived and relentlessly pursued), but has to set aside if he wants to be a good father and husband in this day & age. So, he never published a single book, but will always be remembered for living a good life and always being there for his kids. Can one ever accomplish a more important thing in life? WHERE HAVE YOU LIVED? WHY DID YOU MOVE? Age 0-29: Boulder Colorado Age 29-43: Calgary, Alberta Reason for moving: finish grad school and get a respectable job. Canada had a lot more opportunity, geologically-speaking, in the early 90's than did the states, so there you have it. [the oil patch is a lot more advanced up here ...] THE ONE PERSON FROM MY PAST WHO I'D MOST LIKE TO SEE AGAIN IS Eric McCarty (if he's still alive) BECAUSE he valued my friendship in high school, shared my beliefs, and wouldn't hesitate to drink some beers on 'the hill' with someone who wasn't on the BHS football team (i.e. me)! There's a lot more to it than that -- Eric was probably the most popular guy in our class, and a genuine person. Wonder what he's been up to ... OBSESSIONS -- SPORTS: soccer REALITY TV: Holmes on Homes, Survivor PETS: anything that ain't roadkill (love all critters) ... don't think you can have certain large animals as pets in your home? Check out: youtube.com/watch?v=Qztl8SGjd_Y LIFE DOESN'T ALWAYS TURN OUT THE WAY YOU EXPECT. WHAT'S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST SURPRISE? Moving to Canada, and getting hitched. Now I'm a dual citizen and never saw any of it coming. Wowzers, eh. IF I COULD IMPROVE MY HOME, I'D REMODEL the kitchen AND ADD ON A mud room. MY DREAM HOME WOULD BE somewhere in Rhodes (old town) or Monemvassia.
