Christy O'donnell:

CLASS OF 1987
Tampa, FL

Christy's Story

Life Well, let's see. I headed off to college at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. Met my future hubby, a 6'8" reheaded basketball playing STUD! Graduated in 1991 with an English degree and married my honey in 1992. We lived and worked in Greenville until returning to the Tampa Bay area in 1996. In '98, we welcomed a beautiful redheaded daughter, Annelise, into our lives. I have stayed very involved with my beloved American Saddlebred show horses over the years. Ended up third at the World's Championships and have had the honor of representing the United States in international competition twice (1990-team captain; 1999). I continue to stay involved in international equestrian affairs, running the US arm of the World Cup organization for our sport and just completing my term as the President of the international sporting body for our discipline. But most of all, I'm enjoying watching my daughter learn to ride - she'll be carrying on as the 7th generation of horsemen in our family! Have been able to travel to southern Africa five times, visiting South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Zambia and Zimbabwe! There's not enough room to tell you about the many adventures I've had, but they include being charged by a lion, rafting the Class V+ rapids on the mighty Zambezi River, hot air ballooning over the beautiful countryside in the Gauteng province of South Africa, meeting the military general who overthrew the government of Lesotho, having tea with the Queen of Lesotho...the list goes on and on...life is never dull for this girl! My travels in Africa have cemented my absolute obsession with photography. I continue to run when I can, although I can't quite keep the same pace as I did in 2001, when I ran a half-marathon! Getting old is tough... School CHS 1987...wow...good times! I miss all my buds - remember crazy days (and nights) doing stupid things like 'flagging' and skipping class to head to Clearwater Beach (my mom STILL thinks my senior year tan was from the tanning bed!). Classes (Mr. Laundy, Mrs. Sarrett), parties (yes, if you were one of the ones who painted my dog Hercules, I remember you! and if you left your 'mark' on my house - ahem, PG - I forgive you!!!), basketball games (I am still a sucker for those tall boys!), our trip to GREECE!!!!...very good times. I stopped by CHS last year and saw my former French teacher, Mme Scott. She REMEMBERED ME!!! She couldn't come up with my name, but she stopped me from telling her, then proceeded to tell me she remembered there was something unusual about me....after a minute, she remembered that I was, as she put it, 'the horse girl'!!! What a memory! College Had a great time at Furman (who wouldn't love a school where the President regularly ran out and implored students to join him in a cheer - F.U. one time...F.U. two times....F.U. three times...F.U. ALL THE TIME!). Uh, did I mention that this was a conservative, Southern Baptist-affiliated school located at ground zero...Expand for more
of the 'Bible Belt'?! One of the many schizo things about Furman! I started as a Business major, then abandoned that after a dreadful Macroeconomics course. Decided to be different and applied to create my own major, successfully defending my proposal to create a 'Classical Humanities' major, which is basically like majoring in Latin or Greek, but with a focus on the art, history, architecture and literature of ancient culture as opposed to the language. I had to take the entire Fall term of my senior year off due to my six week stint competing on the U.S. Saddle Seat Equestrian team in South Africa, so I opted to apply my credits toward an English major instead so that I wouldn't have to spend extra time completing my planned degree. Me...a Classics/English major...wouldn't Mrs. Sarrett have been proud?! Workplace Work...I've been busy! Started off as a hot-shot Business Analyst with Dun & Bradstreet, but decided that corporate America was not for me. Ended up working part time for a florist in Greenville while I searched for another 'real job', but ended up as a Professional Bridal Consultant and developed their wedding and event department (including flowers, catering, cakes, etc.)! Started my own business offering additional event planning services. Came back to Florida and worked a brief stint as an office manager before being hired as a Regional Editor for a national horse magazine. Spent five years traipsing around the country covering the industry in which I grew up - had a blast! I put my communications skills to work in 2003, joining the staff of the Hillsborough Education Foundation. I worked as their Public Relations Manager, handling a variety of responsibilities including running their very 'robust' events calendar! Teacher of the Year - my own little dinner party for 1,627 of my closest friends at the Tampa Convention Center. Makes my head hurt thinking about it, but I was proud of it! Made the move this past August to Saint Leo University, where I am the Associate Director for Enrollment Communications. I manage all technology and publications for the Office of Undergraduate Admission. LOVE IT! Oh, and as previously mentioned, I co-founded the United States Saddle Seat Equitation World Cup, Inc., a not-for-profit organization that serves as the US arm of the international World Cup event for our sport. We administrate the selection of the U.S. teams every two years and organize the international event when it is hosted in the U.S. I am the Executive Secretary for the organization and somehow manage to run it along with my 'day job'! Just finished my tenure as the President of the International Saddle Seat Equitation Association, which is the international governing body for our discipline, and am proud to say we are looking forward to participating as an exhibition sport in the 2010 World Equestrian Games! I'm remaining with ISSEA as the Secretary for the 2007-2008 term. Whew...no wonder I'm so tired all the time!!!!
