C. Vincent's Story
MY story:
Born in Cleveland in 1955, my earliest life was spent in Cleveland and Seven Hills. We moved to Sagamore Hills in '64. My family consisted of Mom (Irene), Dad (Wesley), me, and my three brothers (Kevin, Wesley, and Paul).
Most of my education occurred in the Nordonia Hills School system. I can't explain it, but my ability to learn really kicked in when I was in 6th grade. From that point on I was a straight "A" student. I graduated in 1973 (co-valedictorian with one of my best friends at that time, Jimmy Parenica) and went off to Kent State University, where I eventually joined the Sigma Chi fraternity.
I had more difficulty in college than I did in High School, not academically, but personally. My parents divorced during that period, I had to balance working and going to college, and the disease with which I've had to contend my entire adult life really started to manifest itself. It took eight years to graduate and move on.
I had been working since the eighth grade, and my senior year in High School was spent half days at school and half days at work. During college I worked in a factory full time, then in the bar/food service business full time, and finally in retail (jewelry store) full time. It was my 4 years as a bartender/bar manager that had the most serious impact on me, especially socially.
After graduating in '81 with a BA in Economics, I entered the working world as, of all things, a recruiter/corporate head hunter. I worked the technology areas, and wound up getting myself placed as an analyst on the staff of the VP of Computer Services at AmeriTrust, a large bank in Cleveland. nsulting/contracting gigs with a series of companies that went out of business, a publishing company, a wholesale tire company, SIRVA Relocation (a worldwide relocation company), Wipro (a very large India-based outsourcer), and now finally Veyance Technology/ContiTech (a division of the global manufacturing giant, Continental AG, headquartered in Germany), where I am Global Director, IT Service Management.
A few words about my name - prior to going to college, I was known as Christy Vincent Mowrer. My first name came from my grandfather, Christy F. Siciliano, whom I loved dearly. His family immigrated to the US from Italy when he was eight years old, and the workers at Ellis Island couldn't pronounce his first name. Literally translated it meant "Christ like", which they took as "Christ-ish" or "Christ-y"; hence, the name Christy was bestowed upon him by the US Immigration Service. Why they didn't just name him Christian, I will never know.
I was named after my grandpa and grew up with him always around. He taught me to bowl, throw a baseball, bat as a switch-hitter, and hit a golf ball. He bought me my first musical instrument when I decided to play tenor saxophone in grade school. In several ways, he was more of a father role model to me and my brother Kevin than our Dad was. His death from cancer during my junior year of High School was the single most devastating event of my early life. It is in his honor that I still carry his name and chose never to legally change it. I started to abbreviate it when I hit Kent State University simply to avoid the gender confusion that others might experience from it, using my middle name, Vincent, instead. Everyone I've met since late 1973 knows me as Vince or Vincent.
