Chuck's Story

Life I grew up in Rockville, Maryland, and some of the students I went to school with there will recognize themselves in the 2nd grade class photo that accompanies my profile! You can also see a small collection of photos I took at Robert Frost Junior High School in Rockville, MD; it's posted on the Classmates page for that school. My family moved to Bluefield, West Virginia, in 1974 (shortly after starting 10th grade, BIG culture shock), and that's where I finished high school. I've been in WV ever since. After college I went into radio (and I still host the Saturday morning programming at West Virginia Public Radio), but since 1992 I've been an AIDS educator for the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health. I am recently single. ...Expand for more
Workplace After graduating West Virginia University in 1981, I worked as a dishwasher at a Morgantown restaurant for a few months before finally getting my first full-time job, at WTBZ radio in Grafton, WV. I was there for 4 and 1/2 years, then hit the big time as a news reporter and announcer at West Virginia Public Radio in July 1986. I would have probably been content to stay there, but unfavorable personnel decisions disillusioned me, so I started looking for a new job. I eventually found work as an educator and P.R. person for the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health AIDS Program, beginning on Dec. 1, 1992. I've been here ever since, but I still do part-time work as the Saturday morning on-air announcer at WV Public Radio.

Well another dear friend has moved on to the next level. Bob Stalnaker & I go way back to my days in Grafton, WV, where I met him by way of my friend Jim Stallings, who later became a well-known radio personality in Morgant

A bunch of nice, fat, late season ramp bulbs (Allium tricoccum, aka wild leek, American leek). Quarter added for scale. Tromping up into the woods to dig them, trim and clean them, is labor-intensive, but SO worth the effor

Tributes to Paul Auster have been pouring in lately. The author passed away last Tuesday. I confess I'd never heard of him until now, and judging from what I've heard about his body of work, I think I need to stroll over to

The Craiyon artificial intelligence program never fails to fascinate.
Great news: Herb is being discharged tomorrow. He'll still needs many months of cardiac rehab back in Charleston, but he's come a long way. Here he is chatting with our friend Dave Mistich this morning.
I must be doing SOMETHING right.
Nice 3 mile hike in Little Creek Park this beautiful Tuesday.
