Chuck's Story

After living most of my life in Burbank and Glendale, (where he was born) Chuck and his wife Joni (from New Milford, Connecticut) moved to Germantown, Tennessee in 2018. After several years of considering this major move, 2018 was the year we put all the pieces together and actually did it.. We sold our beautiful Glendale home for a "California" price and headed somewhere east In Tennessee we found a beautiful neighborhood with wonderful neighbors and a home that is incredible. It's the typical story, sell in California and get twice the home for half the price somewhere out of state. After several years of consideration and looking at many properties in several states we selected Germantown, which is in western TN. Germantown is a suburb of Memphis, TN and is only about a 1/2 hour drive from either downtown or "Graceland" but worlds apart from Memphis proper. We have friends there and while crisscrossing the country for the last 12 years on road trips between California and the east coast we stayed with them on several of the trips. My wife, Joni, fell in love with the well kept traditional homes, the tree lined streets and the generally friendly people. A wonderful relatively small community (population about 40,000) that is much like it felt in Burbank many years ago when Burbank seemed like a family town. Germantown has their own Police and Fire Departments and a highly rated financially sound City government that is rated the best in the state of Tennessee. The property values continue to grow because of the exceptional Germantown Municipal School district. Families that are looking for a great public education for their children and an up scale neighborhood look to Germantown as a place to buy and live. If they want private schools there are several really good ones in the area. It has been one of the best things we have ever done..................a brand new exciting adventure at this late stage of life that we should have done years earlier. Chuck's schools include John Burroughs High School, where he admits he kept a low bashful profile. Chuck later attended Pasadena City College and LA Valley College (Business Management). Chuck retired in 2006 after a very fulfilling career with the City of Burbank, Water and Power Department. After coming up through the ranks Chuck retired as the Electric Distribution Manager with a total of over 38 plus years of service to the Burbank community. n (7 boys and 1 girl!) along with 3 Great Grandsons. Chuck and Joni are now watching the older grand-children head off to or graduate from college or get married. Grandson Morgan is married and lives in Sherman, CT with his wonderful wife Katie and "our" two Great Grandsons. Grandson Sam Gerow and his incredible wife Hayley recently relocated back to Connecticut and as of May 2, 2022 gave birth to our 3rd Great Grandson, Magnus.. Grand-daughter Maggie Gerow graduated from Montana State University and is now in the Air Force. Grandsons (Wayne's son's) Kyle Herron graduated from Chapman University, Ryan Herron graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with honors with a double major. Ryan is now married and is headed out into the real world to pursue his career. The youngest, Jeremy Herron, is now finishing up at NYU as a Cinema Arts student. As the family grew or were added we find them located in the far corners of US. In the Northeast, Jim, Sue and Grandson Will Gerow are in Pennsylvania. In the Northwest, Mike, Deanna and Grandson Carson Herron, live in Redmond, Wash and Sandpoint, Idaho.. In So Cal Wayne and Yvonne Herron, still live in La Canada, Calif. The immediate family is pretty much covering a lot of the US with us sort of in the middle. One of Chuck's favorite quotes (and words to live by) is: "You sound better quiet"................an old friends Grandmother's favorite saying". You have to love that! 2023 update..... 2023 was a very hard and difficult year for me. My beautiful wife, Joni, after a long 4 year battle with cancer, lost that battle on August 8th. She fought it with all her will but in the end it was just too much. In the spring of 2023 after a routine regular pet-scan showed that the cancer had spread to other parts of her liver, Joni made the courageous decision that she had enough and would not under go any more of the difficult treatments. She made this decision hoping that her remaining days would be tolerable. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. At least now she now is in eternal peace and thankfully will suffer no more. RIP my love. In addition to my beautiful wife, 13 days earlier, I also lost my amazing mother on July 27th. She was exactly 101 years and 1 month old. She lived a good but simple life but in the end dementia had robbed her of her will to live. During her last few years she was well cared for and for that I am forever grateful. My only advice is.............never forget to tell those that you love, that you love them. Cherish the memories.
