Chuck's Story
The world always gets more interesting, the longer that you live. I'm glad I've made it this far, and hope I make it quite a bit further before the lights go out. In spite of the apparent problems in the news each day, this is a really good time to be alive.
My current life is truly excellent, with many close friends and many stimulating mental exercises to keep my brain energised.
I'm married to a Yugoslavian girl that I started dating in late 1991, following an earlier post-college engagement that didn't work out. We were married in 1997, and are still happy together today.
We have no kids, although we have had a series of cats that we treat like children (yeah, go ahead, laugh if you want).
We live on Florida's east coast, in what I like to call an adult's playhouse, where we regularly entertain guests for dinner and parties.
Over time my interests have only gotten deeper and wider. Anything I used to like, I like it even more now, along with many new things.
Currently I'm into collecting rare music by my hundreds of "favorite" bands, collecting books by my fav writers, and modifying and occasionally driving fast in my Mustang GT. Modern technology seems to be at the core of most of my interests, although politics/history/social issues are a close second.
Below is some ancient history from the time period right after school.
While a sophomore in high school, I attended a summer program in computers at the local community college in Virginia. While a senior in high school, I attended Chattahoochee Valley Community College in Phenix City, AL.
After high school I attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at Terre Haute, IN. Since I was under a fully-paid Air Force ROTC scholorship (the first year), I also attended Indiana State University in Terre Haute for my ROTC classes. In my sophomore year at Rose-Hulman I dropped out of ROTC and gave up my scholorship.
After 2 years in Indiana, I transferred to Florida Tech in Melbourne, Florida, where I graduated with honors with a BS in Computer Science. I also attended 1 year towards an MBA (also at Florida Tech) before deciding that it wouldn't do me any good.
So, there you go: 5 schools and one Bachelors degree!
While at school at Rose-Hulman, I joined the Theta Xi fraternity, and in my sophomore year I lived in th...Expand for more
e fraternity house. When I decided to transfer to another school, I choose Florida Tech partially because they also had a chapter of Theta Xi, where I also became very active. Unfortunately the Florida Tech chapter has since closed down.
While in school I drank an ocean of alcohol, and discovered some other bad habits while in college in Indiana and Florida. I would *highly* :-) recommend the experience again!
These days most of the hard partying is well past me, after all you have to eventually grow out of these behaviors or they will wear you down physically.
My hair started turning gray when I was 20, and by 40 there was little that wasn't completely white. Oh well, at least I still have a full head of hair. One benefit of turning white early (for a man) is that you seem to stop aging for several decades.
I've put on a little weight, which is common with a generally sedentary life style. I'm still under 200-lbs but with a definite belly these days...comes from having an excellent cook for a wife.
I've spent my post-college career entirely within a single company, although that company has changed owners and names several times in the past 20+ years.
Currently I run a software development team (varies between 6 and 12 engineers) that produces software used in the publishing industry. The majority of our customers are newspapers that print and produce web sites.
I work with pretty much every form of software today: C/C++/Java, client-server, databases, n-tier architecture, HTML/XML/XSLT, GUI design, graphics file formats, PostScript printer drivers, writing specs, reviewing code, designing small/medium-sized systems, running a fast-moving development team...you name it, I can probably do it.
And the wide variety of topics is what has kept me at the same company for so long. We used to say that if you didn't like what we were currently doing, just stick around for six months and it would change again. That axiom seems just as true today, and it applies to more than just computer software now.
Thanks for reading this far, anyone who actually has enough interest in me to do so. You are welcome to get in touch with me. I own my own domain at 'hawklord.com' (this is my music-related vanity web site) and you can send me emails using:
