Chuck's Story

Life after High School: I went to OU for 4 years. I spent 6 years in the Air Force as a Titan II Nuclear Missile Combat Crew Commander. I got out of the Air Force in 1984 with the rank of Captain. I joined Prudential Insurance and worked with them for 14 years. During my time with the Prudential I lived in New Orleans for 10 years and the rest of the time in New Jersey. While in New Jersey I created new insurance fraud case law and my case is published in the New Jersey Law Books. I've climbed Mt. Whitney twice and spend my winter vacations snow skiing and my summer vacations backpacking and trout fishing in the mountains. I moved back home to Midwest City this year, living in the house I grew up in, and am enjoying having fun with the friends I grew up with. I never got married or had children. Guess I was to much of a free spirit to get tied down. Those of you who really knew me probably are surprised I'm still alive and walking the earth. But, you know what they say....you can't keep a good man down. You might see me at the zoo amphitheatre during a classic rock and roll concert, shooting pool at Slick Willies, bowling at the Planet Bowling Alley, eating at Ted's Escondido or the Redrock Canyon Grill. Or, maybe just dragging Air Depot on a Friday night. Remember those days? Update 2008: After moving home to MWC in August of 2005 and hooking up with some of the friends I grew up with for some fun and games I heard that a girlfriend from my Jr. High School days was again single or more accurately "available" again. Her name was Sandra Walden ( Sandi ), she had gold eyes and we were in band together playing bass clarinet. I always made sure I practiced just enough to keep sitting next to her because I knew she was the girl for me. I really had this "thing" for her. The only problem was this drummer by the name of Allen Heister ( jeeze I hope I spelled his name wrong ) who she had a big crush on and because of that I never did get the chance to date her..... never. I lost touch with her when we went off to college. I guess you could say that she was " the girl that got away ". I was drafted by Judy Barnett, the coordinator on the High School Reunion Committee, to locate some classmates for our 35 year reunion and she managed to locate Sandi whom I had been looking for ever since hearing about her being available again. One thing lead to another before, during, and after the reunion, and to make a long story short she kidnapped me and took me back to Switzerland with her to begin a new life, in a new country, and yet another new vocation. So the girl that got away finally succumbed to fate and decided that, even at the age of 14, I had known what was to finally come to pass long before the future unfolded. What can I say? Once your heart belongs to someone else they have it forever. So, here I sit in our wonderful apartment about 3000 feet above lake Zurich at the foot of the Swiss Alps updating my profile thinking that my friends who called me Lucky Chucky ( and you know who you are ) really knew what they were talking about after all. Life is really weird sometimes. 2009 Update: Still in Switzerland with Sandra Walden and loving it here. Of course life has gotten a whole lot more complicated now with this international thing going on. Probably will not make the reunion this year and will miss seeing everyone lucky enough to attend. I'd love to talk to Ronnie Kaye too since back in the day I used to dance on " The Scene ". What a hoot. Almost embarassing now but I'd love to find the old clips of the tv show of that filming and put together a DVD just for old times sake. School: My biggest crush was Kathy Snyder although she wouldn't have anything to do with me. Jeeze she must have been smart and probably a rocket scientist now or something. hahaha My favorite teacher, damn Mr. Ambler was cool huh. I remember stealing the skull off the skeleton the last day of school and burning candles on top of it my first year at OU. And, yes I did feel guilty about it and snuck it back onto his desk the next year. Glad I didn't get caught. I loved going to the football games on Friday night and to the dance afterward at the community center. Remember the band...Flag...Kevin Welc...Expand for more
h, Kevin Shutt, Dennis Lord? Damn Kevin really made it big huh. Hear he is still touring in concert. I loved dragging Air Depot in my tank, the 1955 Pontiac Starchief, drinking and partying with my friends, going parking out at Draper Lake, and basically getting into as much trouble as possible without ending up in jail. Being on the swim team and getting my letter jacket was the coolest thing that happened to me...that and being selected to participate in citizen day as city planner for the day. Remember little Eddie Garbut running around on the football field during half time with the Del City Flag on fire. God that was funny. I miss those times in my life more desperately than any others. I'd give anything to turn back the clock and relive them....except for the homework. College OU...BOOMER SOONER...or later. College is a blur. Way more homework than I wanted. I majored in beer and pizza. Just kidding. Got my BBA in Business Management and it never has paid off. Yes I went from being a jock to a full fledged card carrying hippie and loved every minute of it. God we had fun all the time. I was wild as hell. I shot the best pool of my life during those times and had more fun than anyone should be allowed. I'm amazed I lived through it. Would I do it again? HELL YES Workplace I joined the the Air Force right out of college as a second lieutenant and was stationed at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita Kansas. My job was manning our nations largest nuclear missile, the Titan II, in an underground missile silo. It was hard balancing the required standards of the military and my hippie lifestyle but I managed it for 6 years. My closest friends still laugh and shake their head when they think about me being the man on the button during those days. I do too. But I guess it takes a special type of person to be willing to nuke a couple million people with the flick of the wrist. I actually loved being in charge of the missile complex. Talk about an easy job. Baby sitting a bunch of machines for 24 hours with only about 2 hours of work to do during that time. We basically just sat around listening to music and watching tv the entire time. A lot of the people were great but some were the most up tight assholes you would ever want to shoot. I made some great friends and had some great times but haven't stayed in touch with any of them. I got out of the Air Force in 1984 as a captain. Would I do it over again. Probably not. I got my Insurance Adjuster License and moved to New Orleans where I lived for 10 years. I worked for a small insurance company owned by "the family", yep "those guys", and later joined Prudential Insurance. I became friends with a lot of great people down there and was considered a converted coonass by the bayou boys. Needless to say I had one hell of a great time down there. When Prudential restructured I moved to New Jersey and became an insurance fraud investigator. One of my cases is in the New Jersey Law Books and I made the largest monetary recovery in Prudentials history. When Prudential sold the Insurance side of the corporation I sold my house in New Jersey and moved back to Midwest City. Right now I'm just kicking back, partying with the friends I grew up with, and having as much fun as possible. Military I went to bootcamp at McConnell AFB in Wichita Kansas. I took First Place in athletic day competition beating out all those other bad asses if you can imagine that. I managed to get about 15 minutes of stick time in a T-38 and a C-130 but my eyes kept me out of flight school. I ended up in the Strategic Air Command, 8th Air Force, 381st Strategic Missile Wing, 532nd Strategic Missile Squadron at McConnell AFB as a missle launch officer for the Titan II Nuclear Missile. I got all the usual ribbons and medals for my service except for earning my expert marksmanship ribbon which I took great pride in. That wasn't easy to get. At least for me. And yes I still own a 44 mag so watch out. hahaha. I spent 6 years in the Air Force achieving the rank of Permanent Captain. I met some great guys during that time but stay in touch with only one...and Max if you read this I'm still sorry about breaking your collar bone. I didn't mean to. Honest.
