Chuck's Story

My Wife Tish Cofrin, born in Green Bay Wisconsin. We married in 1970 after a two year courtship. My first date with her happened at a party at Mark HIlgendorf's apartment in Madison! Education U of Wisconsin, Oregon State U, U of Oregon. I eneded up going to college for almost ten years. I am currently a huge Oregon Duck fan. Homes We left Madison shortly after graduation in Jan, 1971. We moved to Eugene, Oregon and since then have mostly lived in the Eugene area and more currently have also lived in Bend, OR on the dry side of the Cascade Mountains. We did have a Wisconsin home as well outside of Eagle RIver, WI from 1978 to 2000. I no longer have any family living in Wisconsin though. My brother Tom died in 2008 and my sister, Pam livs in Sisters, Oregon, of course. My Kids Tish and I have six children ages ranging from 30 to 40. My first four children are married. Five of my children live in Eugene or Bend, Oregon. My second daughter lives in Austin, TX with her family. Three of my sons in law and my son work in a company that I started 40 years ago. My Job I started my company, Umbrella Properties which has now changed to Shepard Investment Group, in 1975. Our original objective was to purchase undermanaged companies and properties that could be benefited by an accountants touch. Eventually it bacame mostly a private REIT which owns and manages residential property for myself and my children. In 1999 we expanded to owning and managing a ski resort, Hoodoo Ski Area, in the Oregon Cascades and we manage over 150 campgrounds in the Oregon Cascades from Bend, Or to the Canadian border in Washington.. However, I retired in December of 2012 and I now mostly play golf in Bend, OR where we live on a golf course. My job was rarely about work but rather it became a source of fun and fullfillment. terest Soon after we moved to Eugene we lived on a commune with about five couples and their children as we got older. At first we dropped out of society and lived a hippie existance, but as our family grew, I started my company and dropped back in the establishment in a big way when I became a Mormon in 1978. I eventually even became a bishiop from 1993 to 1998. We went from not planning on having any kids to raising six of them. For the most part I would have to say that life has been very good to me, much better than I could have hoped for those many years ago in high school. Although I had no ambitions then so who knows? Sports I loved participating in football especially in high school and other sports as well. I stayed active while living in the foothills of the Cascades in many ways and around the age of 40 I started participating in triathlons. I did that for almost a decade and loved it. I also participated in sports in a business way as well. At one time I owned a 50% share in a BMX bike frame company, a partnership in a workout computer company, and I still am involved in skiing and camping. Mostly today I golf several times a week and honestly I am not much better now than I was when I first started playing at Lincoln and at Lake Park with my friends from Cumberland.. Memories I probably remember my classmates much better than they remember me. I atteneded Cumberland for ten years and all four years at WFB High School. So I had a lot of years getting to know people and I was fairly outgoing. However, some of my memories after high school are somewhat cloudy. I remember asking a few of my high school friends, at the last reunion where they went to college. The answer was "Chuck, we went to the U of Wisconsin with you. You saw us all the time!" My college years could have been spent more productively!
