Richard's Story

Life Born in Chicago, I grew up in Bluffton, Indiana, and (part time) Hominy, Oklahoma. I moved to Muskogee in March 1969, went to West Jr. High, then started at MHS with everyone else, Fall '70. Attended there the full three years, graduating in '73. After graduation, I went to OSU, where I immediately got a job in one of the dorms (Cordell), and became a career student. I was still at OSU (though out of the dorm and into grad school) at the time of the 10 year reunion. I was married to Laura Kinkade of Tulsa just before the reunion. She immediately got pregnant. Sarah was born March '84. Parenthood drove me from college to a job in Tulsa for a year. Then to Telex in Tulsa for three years more. I escaped the layoffs at Telex by going to Compaq in Houston. After a few years at Compaq, I got the job I said I wanted in the 10 year reunion directory, as a computer architect in the Advanced Architecture group, commercial portables, mostly working on things that were three or more years out. If iLink, Firewire or IEEE 1394 mean anything to you, I worked on them as an officer in various industrial and international standards groups. Most of the other things I worked on you would never see or hear of, but it was fun and challenging. I got to travel a bit, mostly within the U.S., but some to Europe, particularly to the U.K. and Netherlands. I loved the Netherlands, and wished I had some idea how to contact Ellen deBoer while there ... not that I'd expect her to re...Expand for more
member me ... just curious how she's done. I've been to every state except Alaska, and spent a lot of time in Canada. Laura and I divorced in '91, and I was given custody of Sarah, our only child. Laura and I are a generally good terms. After 13.5 years at Compaq, we parted ways (they laid off most of the group, including me, first round, the rest the next). I did a little consulting, contract programming and mortgage lending for three years, as the lay-off was unfortunately close to the 9/11 attacks, and the market for what I'm good at went "poof" for a while. In August, 2004, I moved back to Stillwater, and enrolled as a graduate student, and am working towards a masters degree and then (eventually) a doctorate in computer science. I've finished all required course-work and just have my thesis to finish. I did contract work for the Air Force, at Tinker AFB, but now do it for "other military organizations." I proctor tests like the TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, MCAT, National Boards, etc., in part because it's fun dealing with the international students taking the TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language). My attitude is good, I feel fine, and I'm aging almost gracefully. My doctors all call me the most boring patient they have, because I don't have anything to treat. I look forward to hearing from other '73ers ... or anyone else who remembers me, for that matter. A few of you will be hearing from me, but not hearing doesn't mean I don't care, nor that I don't remember.
