Theresa's Story

Life I attended Krebs from 1959 to 1965. You may remember me best as the girl with the "big" hair or, as someone wrote in my yearbook when I graduated from Krebs, "to the girl whose hair has been every color of the rainbow." God knows, I was teased quite a bit about it. Funny, but I became a hairdresser and actually spent 9 years making a living giving others big, colorful hair and also teaching hairdressing as well! Although I attended Conrad High School for the year 1965-66, I did not graduate in 1966. However, you can find a picture of me on the inside cover of the 1966 yearbook, sitting under the big tree in front of the school, sketching during an outside art class. My life took a different course in 1966 when I and my family moved away. Instead of finishing high school, I went to cosmetology school and became a hairdresser. I received my GED in 1973 and changed careers after graduating from business school. For most of my adult life, I have worked in the legal profession as a secretary and word processor. I have looked at the names of the people listed as students and can remember quite a few of you. Unfortunately, I lost touch with most of the people I went to school with, but it is interesting to see the familiar names and know that many are still around. After 30 years of marriage I have recently become widowed. I have 2 grown children and three wonderful granddaughters. In my pictures you will see my beloved Old English Sheepdog (OES), Chauncey, who, sadly, passed away last June. After being petless for about six months, I started working with an Old English Sheepdog rescue group and am now the proud owner of a eight year old, young lady, Heidi. She is not a full bred OES, and, actually looks more like a Bearded Collie, but she is beautiful and a real sweetie. Actually, she has turned out to be a perfect match for me because, in dog years and in human years, we are just about the same age and have the same aches and pains that ladies our age get. We both take a Glucosimine and Condroitin tablet each morning to keep those age related aches and pains from taking over! LOL Although I never thought I'd enjoy it, I am most grateful to Mrs. Gauger (my Home Ec teacher at Krebs) for the needlework skills I have today. I am an avid stitcher, quilter, knitter, crocheter, sewer -- anything dealing with fabric and thread. I've also dabbled in designing cross stitch and embroidery and have made several heirloom pieces for my family and friends. et with several of my stitching friends. I am holding one of the samplers I stitched, along with 7 other ladies from across the country (and one from England), as a participant in a House and Garden themed Round Robin. UPDATE: I am now a published and award winning needlework designer. I design under the name "Heart's Ease Examplar Workes" and won the prestigious Frank Lloyd Wright award for Outstanding Original Design at the 49th Annual Woodlawn Needlework Exhibit. If you like to see my designs you can find them on my blog at Heartseaseexamplarworkes.blogspot.com UPDATE: October 2, 2015 -- My needlework design business is doing very well and I've expanded, not only to designing, but teaching my designs as well. I will be heading to Cincinnati, OH in November to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Queen City Sampler Guild. I was honored to be asked to design a sampler to commemorate the occasion and will be presenting 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes to the first three participant who completed the sampler. See my photos for a picture of that design as well as several of my newest ones. I am also going to be teaching in Mesa, AZ in January. You can find more information about that on my blog site, referenced above. Thanks for stopping by my "bio"! I don't know if anyone here will remember me but if you do, send me a message and maybe we can get reacquainted. School Earth Science was my favorite subject while at Conrad. I can't remember the teacher's name, I think it was Mr. Reader, but he really made that subject interesting and inspired a lifelong interest in geology and astronomy. My favorite teacher at Krebs was actually the principal, Mr. Simmons. Once, during a suspension for passing notes in Mr. Zook's class, I had to come to school but stay in Mr. Simmon's office for three days! During that time, he said some things to me that made me rethink my life and where I wanted to go with it. He was a wonderful, inspiring man, who had faith in me when I did not have faith in myself. I think if I could do it all over again, I would, but I'd hope that I'd have a little more common sense and a positive self esteem so that I would make better decisions, especially ones that would affect the rest of my life. Art class was always a favorite of mine, especially when we were able to go outside and sketch. There is a picture of me in the 1966 Conrad yearbook sitting under a tree in front of the school, sketching. I've always been artistically inclined and have managed to utilize that talent over the years in all aspects of my life.
