Ethelene's Story
After graduation, I went to work for the Autonetics Division of North American Aviation, Inc. (to become Rockwell
International) in East Anaheim, and went to school at night at Fullerton Jr. College. It was a great job, and I had lots of friends from work since I worked for Field Engineering and Training (which consisted, for the most part, of Electrical Engineers right out of college). We worked hard, but had a very good time after work and on weekends..
I was married in 1964 to a very brilliant computer engineer who later became a programming consultant. We bought a home in Mission Viejo (when there was only about 300 people there) and lived there for 18 years or so. We did lots of traveling all over the world (with at least one or two trips a year to Hawaii). We decided that we wanted to retire in Hawaii, and decided to do it very early (I was 40). The retirement didn't last long -- and after about three years of unemployment for the only time in my life and showing many, many relatives and friends around Oahu, I began looking for work there. I ended up working for Hilton Hawaiian Village and eventually for the Hale Koa Hotel (where I was a Catering Manager/Wedding Planner). Fun but very stressful. But, it was paradise!
I'm very sad to say that my first husband, who remained my best friend for a lifetime, passed away in July 2011.
I was divorced and on my own for a while. Then I met my second husband who traveled to work at the Pearl Harbor Shipyard, and eventually he moved to Hawaii and we were married. Then, he went to work on Johnston Atoll (about 800 miles southwest of Honolulu in the ...Expand for more
middle of the ocean - a very small island about 1/2 mile wide by
2-1/2 miles long and seven feet above sea level (not a big place). Don't know what possessed me, but I went to work there too to be with my husband. This is something that I never should have done. After completing our assignments on Johnston Atoll, we moved back to Southern California. This is how I made a complete circle back to where I started from and I am still working for Fullerton College (that I attended in my early years). To make a long story short - I am divorced again, and cannot wait to get back to Hawaii, which is home to me after living there for 18 years. I miss the island life and my friends a lot.
So, it is my plan to retire soon, and move back to Hawaii. I am trying to decide if I want to go back to Oahu where
I lived before, or to Maui (that I love and visited for years). I think Maui is going to be the winner -- I think I can take
a quieter life now.
My one big regret is that I never had any children. The timing just never seemed to be right. I'm an only child, and my father was diagnosed with Multiple Schlersosis shortly after I graduated, and I felt I needed to be available to help. He passed away at 48. I lost my mother ten years later at the age of 55. So, now I am alone except for nieces and nephews by marriage that I love dearly. But, if I go home to the islands -- they will visit I'm sure (they did before).
I am glad to be back in touch with some of my high school friends. It seems like a very long time ago since high school in many ways and just like yesterday in others. God bless you, Ethelene
