Virginia's Story

Life I am continuing to learn life is a very exciting journey. In my spare time I remain a hospice volunteer. In April of 2009 I returned to Houston from Ojai, CA ,after caring for my oldest sister, Sherry, who had a stroke 5 years ago. I miss the beauty of Southern CA; it was a special experience to enjoy the mountains again. But my home, Houston, Texas, beckoned me back with its sultry evenings and the promise of regaining my "Southern" accent. I have one son, Christopher, born on Valentine's Day, 1972. I have one grandson, Alejandro (Alex), born April 23, 2002. My life is good and meaningful, and I am blessed. The real things for me are the intangibles and the ability to remain authentic. I have expericenced many losses thus far; yet the rewards have been abundant. This particular chapter of my life is even more embracing; I find my curiosity so heightened and I can report that I am very comfortable in my own skin. College I took several college classes, had my son at 25, worked in the day, and when the homework got to me at 1:30 AM, and I saw strands of my hair falling out, then I knew that motherhood had the highest priority. I watched my only son, Christopher, graduate Magna Cum Laude from The University of Houston Honors Program. He was also in the Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, Vice President of his Senior class, and won cutest baby picture contest in his Senior year in high school. That made up for my hair trying to fall out! Workplace I have worked in mental health for the past 25 years. I am also a hospice volunteer. I took off a year to become a Volunteer Coordinator for a hospice here in Houston. I recruited and trained volunteers to bring quality of life to the terminally ill. I am also a Bereavement volunteer for the caretakers of the terminally ill. I truly enjoy working in the medical field on an administrative and creative level. I love people and find great comfort in easing the vexations of their spirit. I honestly believe that we continue to learn something new and exciting on a daily basis if we seek the knowledge. I can remember being President of the Reading Club in the 7th grade at Park Junior High School. Books became the instrument of adventure for me, and they still continue to offer solace in times of reflection. I especially appreciate philosophy and poetry. Through my work I have continued to learn so much about how people feel and what is important to them. I find the rewards of my work in being able to offer some level of comfort to those experiencing emotional wounds. But haven't we all shared those emotional wounds, i.e., being rejected at those dances, not being picked...Expand for more
for that sports team, feeling left out in school;now we are hopefully viewing the world through the eyes of our children and grandchildren. Also we are making our own personal journey through life much more bravely than we did in school. I moved from Houston, TX to Antioch, CA, when I was 13 and it was a traumatic move. After all, Houston is an enormous city filled with unlimited culture. But Antioch proved to be a stepping stone and working those endless week nights at The Stamm Theater was truly a major task at the time. How many popcorn boxes can you fold in a short period of time? How many times can you have "Jiggs" scream at you for letting in little kids who had no money?! How many times could a young girl walk across the railroad tracks for 2 years just to go to Park Jr. High, when she was zoned to Antioch Jr. High? I fell in the mud a few times and had to go home and change clothes! That's how badly I wanted to keep going to Park Jr. High School! I hope I was respected for just being a simple girl with high standards. Along with others, I haven't always made the right choices, but you continue to grow even in times of disenchantment. The bottom line for me is that Life isn't a dress rehearsal; we are not promised the next 15 minutes. Compared to what I do in life now, The Stamm is really a kindergarten memory, but I smile when I go to the movies these days. I still remember the old popcorn is mixed with the new, and the old candy bars are on top! What ever happened to the usherettes with flashlights? What ever happened to simplicity? My answer to that question? I find it in a field of flowers in the Texas Hill country, in a wonderful ballet, in the symphony, in art, and in the eyes of my son, his son, and I am grateful one more time. I especially treasure those that befriended a very young girl from Texas that took 3 days to say the word "five." They know who they are and they are special to me. I am grateful for those classmates that have taken the time to "know" me now at this time in my life. I always wanted to be a writer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a possible idea. As it turns out, they were right!. (I enjoy "writing.") When I especially want to vent or express my feelings I simply write whether it be a fictional story or a wonderful philosophical missive. I also love random photography; those Kodak moments are much more special than National Geographic covers! The wildest thing I ever did in school (sophomore year) was throw an orange across the isle to Kay Stogner in class. Ah, the wildest thing I do now? Well, I try to find a parking place at Christmas!
