Burton (Clarence)'s Story
In 1989 came out as gay man and met the love of my life, Ron. After college worked at Andersen Consulting and founded the Old Sixth Ward Community Development Corporation, later served as executive director. Ran Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee's Congressional Office after her election and the ran her political campaigns as part of Bagby and Associates. IÂm a fourth generation active member of South Main Baptist Church, whose 5,000 members voted almost unanimously to withdraw from the Southern Baptist Convention in January, 2001 due largely to the SBC's intolerance in regard to women and gays in ministry.
Have served on numerous boards, including Greater Houston Preservation Alliance, Houston Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus, MECA youth arts organization, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (National Board), Houston Chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), and Police Advisory Committee. First board member appointed to the Old Sixth Ward Redevelopment Authority board.
Elected president of Houston Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus, SouthÂs oldest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization. Elected three times as president of Old Sixth Ward Neighborhood Association and founded Old West End Association and Old West End Historical Foundation. Currently member of Sharpstown High PTO board.
As mayoral appointee to Houston Enterprise Community Board, represented Houston at White House Community Empowerment Conference in 1996, joining 60 others for dinner in West Wing of White House with President Clinton at end of co...Expand for more
nference. Vice President Gore moderated conference. Each of us had privilege of meeting privately with both President Clinton and Vice President Gore. Semi-retired from politics, just occasionally volunteering for a political campaign of a friend, like Houston City Council Member Anne Clutterbuck, neighbor and city council candidate Herman Litt, or Houston City Controller Annise Parker, running for mayor of Houston.
Having finally answered God's call to vocational ministry, I am a licensed American Baptist minister pursuing a master of divinity degree at Andover Newton Theological School, the nation's oldest graduate school celebrated our bicentennial in 2007. The school is dually affiliated with American Baptist Churches USA and the United Church of Christ.
I have officiated at three weddings and several funerals, as well as baptisms and the Lord's Supper. This is an amazing new chapter in our journey of life.
On April 25, 2009, Ron and I married at First Baptist Church in Newton, Massachusetts, founded in 1780 and the oldest congregation in the city. Our families were present as were about 175 other family members and friends. It was an amazing day.
Our sweet blessing, Rosalee Marie Bagby-Grose, was born on May 28, 2009. We spent the first night in the hospital with our beautiful daughter and brought her home the next day! What a wonderful part of our lives she is!! Thanks be to God.
