Allen's Story

Life Well, I was born in a small town north of Salt Lake City, (Ogden) more years ago then I like to remember. Never graduated from high school, left home when I was 16, took my high school sweetheart on my 1958 Harley and headed for California. Needless to say I had her parents and the law after me for awhile, but both gave up after a few months. I worked a ROAR Aircraft painting airplane parts, lied about my age to get the job. Had some wild times, rode with the Hells Angles, Riverside Chapter for awhile, called the Roman Coasters. Every Friday night, (payday) we would head for Las Vegas, by Sunday night we were all broke, had to pool money to get gas for the ride home. This lasted for about three (3) years, I had two children. Then out of the blue on day, my wife up and left, did not even leave a note. Did not know why until much later in my life. About two month after that my Dad called me saying that I had gotten my draft notice, and I had better come home. I found out that my wife had filed for divorce and had turned my name into the draft, I was now 1A. Went into the Army in January 1966, took basic at Ft. Lost in the Woods, because there was a Hepatitis outbreak at Ft Ord. It was just great going from sunny\ California to little Korea as they called it. Made it through basic and was sent to Ft Benning for AIT, then to Ft, Polk for jungle training. Then to Vietnam,Republic Of, in August of that year. I had an MOS as CID. Military Police 65B, but when I reported to the CO of HHC 199th, he stated "Don't need any criminal investigators here, have the 152...Expand for more
nd MPs guarding the main base, I know we'll put you in with the 71st LRRPs in a> new CRIP Platoon". You get to go out with the Infantry and seek out and capture VC and NVA. Never trained for this, but here we go. Spent my first year and then re-upped for another tour, left Vietnam, Republic Of, from camp Zama Japan, (hospital) August 1969. Got home to a hostile crowd. Started college at Northrop University Pasadena, California. Oh yea, my ex-wife, well she had passed away, had cancer, went home to her parents so they could raise the two boys. She left me a long letter explaining, to this day don't understand. Seen my boys five or six times since then. Received a degree in Accounting from Northrop and went to work in Denver where I received my MBA from University of Colorado, also my CPA certificate. Things went well for a number of years, got re-married, had two more children, a boy and girl, and then I got caught in a downsize in 1991. I was out of work for over four (4) years, lost everything, wife, kids, home, etc. Lived on the street most of the time, until a friend of mine saw me one day and took me to the VAMC here in Atlanta. I'm 100% disabled, but carry on. I have a part time position at Emory University, as a cost accountant, see my kids on holidays and my wife and I are trying to get back together. Update, my wife passed in 1996, my son in 1997, work now as a system analyst, just came back from Iraq, and heading to London next week, anybody want to lease a house in Park City, just joking, not there much. Well there you have it in a nut shell.
