Claude's Story
Life
After Eglin AFB Elementary, Monroe and Robinson, I went to USF, then to Harvard Law School. Since then, apart from two years' Army active duty, I have lived in New York City. I serve as General Counsel and Editor of Brooklyn Bugle Media, LLC, a start-up company which publishes several on-line community news blogs. I am also active in the work of East Brooklyn Congregations, an association of religious groups that promotes community development and education in the Borough.
In 1991, I married Martha Foley, an historian and archivist. She provides consulting services to various governmental, educational and religious organizations concerning the cataloguing, organization and preservation of historical materials. Our daughter, Elizabeth Cordelia Scales, was born in November, 1993. She is now in tenth grade at Essex Street Academy, a charter public high school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Liz has strong interests in wildlife and nature, art, history, and mythology, as well as being a fan of the BBC "Rumpole of the Old Bailey" series (of which we have a complete DVD collection) and the bands Arcade Fire, Flogging Molly, and Gogol Bor...Expand for more
dello. She is learning to play electric guitar, but tells me her keenest ambition musically is to learn accordion.
Our home is in Brooklyn Heights, across the East River from lower Manhattan. We participate in various arts and cultural organizations, and are members of Grace Church (Episcopal), where I am a lay reader, Elizabeth an acolyte, and Martha the parish archivist.
We love the City, but also enjoy visiting my mother (who turned 92 last October; my father died in 2004 at the age of 90) in Tampa. We also like to visit Martha's mother and stepfather, who now live in Massena, in northern New York State, where I have spent many pleasant hours watching ships transiting the Eisenhower Lock on the St. Lawrence Seaway. Getting there involves a scenic drive through the Adirondacks and Champlain Valley, or a pleasant ride on Amtrak's "Adirondack" (I'm a rail as well as maritime buff) along the same route.
If you want to keep up with my events and musings (such as they are), please look at my blog, which has the title Self-Absorbed Boomer. You should find it easily by entering the title, or my name, in the search engine of your choice.
