Clifford's Story

After starting high school at Radford High in Honolulu (1963-1964), I graduated from San Luis High and attended Cuesta College with a leaning towards engineering/architecture. Later, I attended various classes at Cal Poly as part of my continuing education in engineering and construction management. I worked 36 years with the SLO County Engineering/Public Works Department. My wife Jana and I now spend most of our time on the banks of the Clark Fork near Thompson Falls, Montana. We still return to the Central Coast frequently to visit long time friends and favorite restaurants. Having grown up in Hawaii and the California Central Coast, I'm often asked, "why Montana". My side of our family is from Montana and Wyoming. Farmers, ranchers and railroad employees spread out from the Montana Hi-Line to the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming. My family came to the Central Coast when my father was stationed at Camp Roberts in 1952. My parents fell in love with the area. Nothing like the coast and oak forests in North Eastern Montana where they grew up. Most vacation time while growing up was spent in Montana and Wyoming with my parents families. My uncle was an engineer with BNSF and he allowed me in the engine with hi...Expand for more
m on his runs between Greybull and Shoshoni, Wyo. Rode my first horse at 6 on a family friends ranch outside Greybull, Wyoming. My Wyoming cousin Duane, taught me to fly fish when I was 7 Years old. Started driving grain trucks at 13 on family farms near the Hi-Line during the summer in Montana. Horses, a friends ranch, a cabin in the Big Horn Mountains and fishing....I loved it all. This may also explain why I enjoy the openness of Carrisa Plains so much. Jana and I will always love the Central Coast as well as Montana. My music favs runs from any version of Ghostriders ( yeah every version from Burl Ives to Spiderbait) to AC/DC's Thunderstruck. I know, a contradiction. I don’t often listen to AC/DC, but when I do, so do my neighbors. But I still can enjoy Darius Rucker, Reverend Payton's Big Damn Band, and Mean Mary while liking Def Leppard and Nickelback. Still love the Eagles and Queen. Jana hates the volume levels I use and she leans towards quieter 50’s and 60’s music. One of my favorite quotes attributed to Thomas Jefferson and Sam Clemens is "never trust a person who can only spell a word one way ." I’ve always believed that you should keep your mind open to new ideas and differing opinions.
