Clifford's Story
Clifford's schools include Kaimuki High School, Ali'iolani Elementary School, William Paul Jarrett Intermediate School. He later attended University of Hawaii.
Clifford's interests include Lexington Legends, Bellingham Community Chorus, badly strumming the four chords he knows on his ukulele (and trying to sing). He is about to tackle replacing the water pump and timing belt on his 1989 Nissan truck. Check back later, he may still be working on it. Update alert. After sitting in the front yard for a couple of years, the truck became a "Kidney car." too old, too beat up and too many other things dying on it.
A view from the far side, or (Some of us take a long, long time to grow up.) When we were back in high school, Ewa Beach was at the "far end of the world." Â So now I live in Ewa Beach. Such is life. How did I get here? And please note, this side of the island should not be considered a negative thing. Hey! We have two Longs and one Walgreens! And lots of golf courses, including the Prince in my backyard.
When we were kids, my parents would look at us and say things like, doctor, lawyer, teacher etc. When they
looked at me, they would say, "Civil Service!" Never quite figured that out till many years later. Maybe I should
have followed their advice/suggestion, once I figured it out. Nice safe career and a pension to go with it. Why I
could be retired by now! Some people learn sooooo slowly.
But, when you have an attention span of 32 seconds, life gets a lot more interesting. So, after leaving the
somewhat familiar/friendly confines of Kaimuki High School, the world awaited me. It took stops at Honolulu Community College, Kapiolani Community College and UH Manoa to finally get a B.S. degree, Speech Pathology and Audiology. Who would have thunk?! And it only took ten years!
Along the way there were bunches of jobs, some even fulltime, a marriage and a baby. Then it was off to Bellingham, Washington and graduate school. A short 18 month planned stay, turned into 20 years, another baby, a house and funky adventures.
For 14 of those years, there was a once a week radio show (KUGS-FM 89.3 /Western Washington University) spinning Hawaiian tunes, for 30 minutes, then an hour and over ten years of two hours every Saturday morning. Surprisingly, since I left in early 1999, other folks have stepped up and continued on with the show. Something I started in 1984 keeps on going!! Congrats to Maui girl Bernadette (Oliveira) Davidson and son Mike for keeping on keeping on. I think by now they've surpassed my time on air Does that make me famous? Nah.

Most of the time there, worked at North Puget Sound Hearing & Speech as a Hearing Aid Dispenser, testing, fitting and follow up on hearing aids. Spent the final five years or so in Bellingham at Bellingham Hearing Center. Great place, great people. Didn't make me famous either.
Along the way, also wrote a once a month column for the local daily paper, The Bellingham Herald. Didn't make me famous either. Oh well. Doomed to a life of quite mediocrity.
We were somewhat known in Bellingham as the family with the two kids who had loooong Hawaiian names. The
kids loved it when folks would say, "ÂHey, you both have these really long names, who are your parents?" And
they would laugh and say, "Cliff and Diane."
Moved back to Hawaii in 1999 as part of the staff (three of us) of the Hawaiian Chinese Multicultural Museum and Archives. Never heard of it? Things happen. Never got to where we thought it should go and so ended my museum career. So here in Ewa Beach, well into the 21st century. Life moves along. Got our first and one and only grandchild in August, 2014. Bummer, she lives in Lexington, KY. A long plane ride away. But she's cute and looks just like me.
What else have I learned in life? I recently found out that more than one school teacher, including a 'Â67 Kaimuki
graduate who shall remain un-named, (got that Leighton?) used me as an example to their students of why you
should never run around with a pair of scissors. So, in my life I've become an asterisk in rules of conduct for little kids. Life goes on.
Yes, life moves on. Had this brilliant idea. Since I've had a hearing aid for five years and I actually worked as a dispenser for almost twenty years in Washington State, I could get a part-time job doing that and spend any down time tinkering with and getting my own hearing optimized.... with all the latest and greatest! Tactical error. Got a part-time position....... at one of the world's busiest retail outlet. Running me hard and no time to play with my own hearing. Oh well. It is fun and rewarding, despite the extreme, upbeat tempo. Life still moving on.
More updates. Still working, I think, AT THE BIG BOX WAREHOUSE, although I haven;t been there for a few months. Ran into a small problem and had to get my plumbing redone. Have a great new scar down the middle of my manly chest now. Aboiut 14". Didn;t have it on my "bucket list", but I did get to ride in an ambulance with the sirens going.
Still alive in 2021! Now fully retired and somewhat Covid bored and stffled.
I will update this thing if anything interesting ever happens in my life.
