The wildest thing I ever did in school . . .
was to skip school one day and go to Stoner Piano on Grand and browse through their used piano department. After talking with Mr. Stoner I bought a used piano. Of course, Vice Principal Anderson called my mother to ask where I was. This caused me much grief. However, I still own and play that piano to this day!
I always wanted to be a Pilot when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a ridiculous idea. As it turns out, they were right.
The reason I wanted to be a pilot was that my favorite uncle, the only relative with a college degree from Drake, was a P-38 pilot in WWII. He was admired by the rest of the family, thus I guess I thought that if I became a pilot, I would be admired just like him. Well, poor eyesight washed me out during my enlistment physical.
However, I was a pilot for a day when I was at Fort Leonard Wood MO. You see, during that morning formation the sergeant askd if anyone wants to volunteer to be a pilot. Stupid me, I held up my hand and was assigned to the sergeant needing my services.
I knew I was dupped when the group of us volunteers were transported to our assignment. When we arrived the sergeant said, "Ok soldier pilots, pick up a rock in the field" as he pointed to a very, very large rock in the field, then continued with "then (pile it) on the edge of the field. Repeat that until you are relieved." That was my last time I volunteered to be a pilot.
