Clyde's Story
A 'GIG IN THE LIFE' OF A
HIGH SCHOOL ROCK BAND
I remember once when our band, The Shades, played at the Mt. Holly Community Center after a footgball game. Let's see now, I believe there was Scot Pope, James (Arlond) Hoyle, Mackey Phieffer, Steve Waldroop, and yours truly. I had build my first light system. Oh it was a beauty, color flood lights controlled with toggle switches on one circuit and a strobe light on another. It was so cool and gave us that "atmosphere" & "look" on stage (at least we thought so).
Well.....needless to say, I didn't have much technical knowledge about such things as fuses or ground fault protection. About halfway through the show someone must have stepped and/or stomped on a power cable to the flood lights creating a 'dead short' condition. >> I tell you, it was a true thing of beauty to see twenty feet of light cable melt under 110 volts of electrical power, WOW MAN!! Fortunately (besides no one getting electrocuted...Expand for more
) the strobe light circuit was still working and smoke from the fried power cable looked so cool drifting up in the strobe light as we were playing. Don't know for sure but I think it was "Inna-Gotta-Da-Vita" or "Sunshine of My Love".
Yeah, all great moments in rock band history have to end at some point..... it all happened so fast - I can remember rocking out to the song as the smoke rose up under the strobe light and thinking, hey this could win a choreography award (or fire code citation). But just as the crowd was getting into our apparent intentional stage antics, Mackey, our lead guitarist, freaked out, quit playing and dove off the stage. As I mentioned earlier, it was the abrupt ending of a "visual rock moment in time" for me at least.
I never really thought about it, but that experience may have been a driving force for me going into the occupational health & safety area.
Anyway, now I know to check the fuses when the lights go out!!!
