Clyde's Story

After graduating from Fitchburg High, I attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. I majored in Chemistry and was able to play Division III football while attending. I started at defensive tackle as a sophomore, and was able to start both ways at tackle as a senior. Unfortunately, I broke my arm in our third game against Amherst and had to miss the rest of my senior year. In 1972, I married Donna DuBois (also a member of the FHS class of ’69; Steve Holt – FHS ’69 was our best man) while still attending Wesleyan. After graduating in 1973, Donna and I moved to Ithaca, New York where I attended Cornell University. I received my PhD in synthetic organic chemistry from Cornell in 1978. I joined the DuPont company at their Experimental Station Laboratory in Wilmington, Delaware in late 1978. Over the next 36 years, I worked in a variety of both technical and managerial positions at laboratories located in Philadelphia, PA, Parkersburg, WVA, Memphis, TN, and Buffalo, NY. I retired from DuPont as a Technology Fellow at the end of 2014. Donna and I have three children. We were married for 12 years before our daughter Kristel was born. Kristel was joined by two sons Jeffrey and Andrew over the next few years. Kristel now has identical twin girls (2 yrs old), and Jeffrey a five year old son. All of our children and grandchildren currently live in Western New York (Buffalo / Rochester) area. Donna and I have l...Expand for more
ived just south of Buffalo (in the lake effect snow belt) for over 20 years, so we consider ourselves “Buffalonians”. After the Buffalo Bills or Sabres are out of contention, I join my brother Donald (FHS – ’72; who still lives in Leominster) as an avid Patriots and Bruins (and Celtics and Sox) fan. Over the years I have “collected” a number of artificial body parts. I currently have two artificial hips, and two artificial knees. On occasion (becoming more and more rare), I manage to ski, bicycle, or backpack with Donna or my brother. After becoming gainfully employed, I became very interested in general aviation. During the ‘80’s, I obtained my Commercial Pilot license with both twin engine and instrument ratings. During the 90’s I became a certified flight instructor for both primary and instrument students. I even managed to participate in some basic aerobatic competitions during the mid-to-late 90’s. I currently have more than 2000 hours of flight time in a variety of general aviation aircraft. Since retiring however, I have sold my share of a Cessna 182T which I owned with three other pilots, so I don’t get to fly as much anymore. I have also been involved in a variety of shooting sports over the years. I still participate in pistol, rifle, and trap shooting competitions in the local area. More recently, I have become interested in Amateur (Ham) Radio, and have just received my Amateur Extra license (W9CSH).
