Ray Or Raphael's Story

I am a retired political journalist. Most of my career was spent in Kentucky, where I worked for three newspapers. The largest was the Lexington Herald-Leader, a publication that covered roughly half of the state. For six and a half years during my 14 year tenure I covered state government, including the governor and the state Legislature. When I joined the paper in 1974 there was the Lexington Herald, an A.M> paper and the Lexington Leader, a P>M. The Leader was essentially a Lexington metropolitan newspaper. Saturday and Sunday they published the combined Lexington Herald_leader. In the early 1980s, Knight-Ridder, the chain that also published the Miami Herald, merged the two publications. During most of my time on the state government beat I worked for both the Herald and Leader. My specialty was covering government and politics and I did a lot of investigative stories. Knight-Ridder eventually went out of existence -- long after I left the paper, and today the Herald-Leader is part of the McClatchy chain. After graduating from South Broward, I attended Broward Community College and after graduating there I transferred to the Universi...Expand for more
ty of Florida, which had the second rated Journalism College in the country. I graduated in 1967 with a BS in Journalism. To this day I am a diehard Gators fan. I have been very lucky to have great All Americans at every school I went to. At South Broward we had Tucker Fredrickson in my sophomore year. He later became All American at Auburn and the number one draft pick in the NFL. At Florida, I got to watch Steve Spurrier for two years and he won the Heisman Trophy in 1966. Of course, he later came back as head coach and had 122-27-1 record with six SEC titles and one BCS championship. Back in high school I went by my birth name of Raphael. As many of you know -- some probably remember me by my heavy German accent -- I was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1945 -- a little less than three years before Israel became a country. In 1964 I became a naturalized US citizen and changed my first name to Ray. Back then I was all too sensitive about people mispronouncing my name. I am now pretty much retired and I have become a Democratic activist and am a strong supporter of President Barack Obama. I now live with my wife, Lisa Tarr Cohn in Las Vegas.
