Colleen's Story
Home Again. I'm back in California and slightly sad about leaving the tropics behind. It was a great two-year stint. Now it's time to recoup my finances and see that my daughters are properly launched. My oldest just left for Berlin. She has music connections there and they love her style of techno music. Hopefully, my younger daughter, Sabrina, will find an artist-in-residence program or some other means of continuing her artistic endeavors. I'm in full swing with a busy tutoring schedule this summer. I'll have to find a way to fit in kayaking and hikes. I guess that's what the weekends are for... but I do miss my warm beaches... There's nothing like swimming in a warm sea. Ahhhhh.

Well, it's an interesting year of travel and teaching. I spent the summer in England tutoring two young boys. My picture was taken in my daughter's favorite store in London; Cyberdog. The place is blacklit with thumping techno music and the Camden Town area is filled with open air stands selling candles, retro clothes and all kinds of head-shop paraphanalia. n you believe green mohawks are still around? The 60's live. And now I'm in St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands on a one-year teaching stint. I work with kids who have dyslexia and other learning differences. Good job. Good life. My daughters are taking care of our home in San Rafael, Ca. while I'm gone. My older daughter, Chelsea said, "I feel like I have empty nest syndrome." when I left. She's 23 and a musician in San Francisco. My baby, Sabrina is 19 and a painter/photographer. Me? No art to speak of, except for turning out beautiful daughters. Colleen
p.s. I'm onto Year 2 on St. Thomas. Couldn't resist another contract, but it's back to California at the end of June. I miss my little family and friends. Living in paradise can entail prejudice, violent crime and inconveniences, in addition to the blissfully warm water, warm weather and new friends. Life is a learning experience that never ends. I've done two years in Tropic School.... and love it. I have learned that paradise is a location in your head. You can choose to take it with you wherever you go or leave it behind. Seems like a no-brainer to pack it up and take it along. Peace, ~colleen
