Colleen's Story

Okay I was a partier and have some great stories from High School, just most of them took place while ESCAPING the East Bentwood "Penitentiary" School Yard, as I called it then. <chuckling>Most of them involve recreational substances and beer, wine or liquor...and good rock and roll. I still am a social animal and go to concerts a lot. Except this time around, I get to go backstage and shoot photo's with permission. <Last summer, I shot Alice in Chains, Incubus, Pink Floyd members at various genre's, Velvet Revolver just to name a few> And I have got to meet people like, Paul Newman<before a race in St Petersburg>, Pat Schroeder <Sen>, Matthew Lesko, Slash, The Harlem Globetrotters <twice in twenty years>, Evel Knevel, MANY baseball and football players, Mark Summers from the Food Network again, just to name a few. I still enjoy Rock N Roll, but prefer three types of Music, Alternative Rock, Head Banger <I am a HUGE Rob Zombie fan> and Classical music and Opera, NO COUNTRY MUSIC, no oldies unless my husband makes me listen to it...he is a classical rock fan with a passion for Jimmy Buffet, Robert Palmer and bands like Little River Band, the last one I can tolerate....LOL <blecht> I started out as a little bartender at the Beltline Bar in the late 70's and early 80's got married to a Mr. Van Solkema....moved to St Petersburg, divorced a Mr Van Solkema, <I thought there was a rule that you couldn't leave MICH. without taking at least ONE Hollander with you...>finished my BA in business, in Mich before I left...and I have worked as: A teacher, A Director of Catering or Director of Sales and Marketing with a few different Hotels and Resorts, also I worked as a Food and Beverage Director for a few years for a cruise ship line <5 ships total at one time>, I am a fine dining expert and am always sharpening my knives to cook for some holiday or affair. I still like preparing menus that will WOW the masses. I own my own Company now as a major Event Planner called Dreem Teem Extraordinary Events, my website is still under construction, but should be ready soon. I have two kids from <the X>Mr Van Solkema and he is now re-married down here in FL. Zach my oldest son is 23 and is in the NAVY and married, looking to start a family when he returns from overseas this summer and a beautiful daughter Chelsea, who will be 21 this May and studying to get her degree in the next couple years. I am extremely proud of them both as I have never had any challenges with drugs, alcohol or police with any kind with any of them and I have the support of a GREAT new husband to attribute this to. Speaking of the new...Mr. Colleen, I then re-married Mr Terry Bryan, whom I ADORE, and we have a ten yr old son together, he is a delight and now my nest will never be empty, Turner is a funny quick witted 10 yr old who LOVES to cook and travel with me when he can. I have had a pretty great career and life has been good to me. I am not rich yet<damn it> but I am rich with experiences and family. Because I live completely surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and and Tampa Bay, I am a boat owner who LOVES to fish, anyone want to fish? I can take you for the complete tour via boat....it's like living in paradise down here. However a good hurricane in my area could make us look even worse than New Orleans, because I am...Expand for more
only about ten to twenty feet above sea level here. So we pray a lot, during Hurricane Season.<chuckling> I lost my younger brother Jeffrey <Class of 79> on the Christmas Eve 2003, in Jacksonville, FL. He would have been 43 THAT day. I lost my sweet Father in 2005, he died at the Resort where I worked at, on St Pete Beach, it nearly broke my heart. I miss them both a lot. And both losses deeply affected me. I really enjoy life and I play hard and work hard as a result. <some things never change huh> I am currently attempting to write a couple books. Due to my short attention span, I am trying to write about THREE at once. Adult A.D.D. has TOTALLY set in. <LMAO> Maybe I will have completed at least one and get published soon, cross your fingers for me, the genres are as varied as my attention span I am afraid, but feel free to inquire if you have about 20 mins....<LOL> I have heard from other East Kentwoodians and am really PLEASED about it, I have really enjoyed catching up, as each classmate had different news and from different perspectives. Also I am interested in putting together some photo montages with old High School Pics if you have them, feel free to contact me about it. Like I said, I am the owner of my own Company called Dreem Teem Extraordinary Events in Tampa Bay FL. I am an Event Planner, Designer and Wedding Planner. So I am now taking the JOB of our Class Reunion, I need to hear from ALL who care to join us. Check all the message boards and photo albums for updates and a quick grin! I have enjoyed a wonderful career in the Catering Industry and I love to cook and eat exotic foods. I still enjoy the arts very much and still love to throw a good party. I am also the current President for the Florida West Coast Chapter, National Association of Catering Executives. WE have about 100 Members and Nationally about 3500 Members. I have been the local President for the last three years and maybe for the next two coming up, it's an election year and I may run for another term, we will see.... I live ten minutes from the Gulf of Mexico in St Petersburg FL, where I have been for the last 23 years now. Please write me sometime or call soon. I just had lunch with, Scott VandenBerg aka:"Heavy" on March 26, 2008, we had a ball catching up, he was in FL visiting relatives and I would LOVE to hear directly from others. Do NOT hesitate to call me, as I love to hear from old classmates...<EMAIL ME here, and I will send you my phone # they will not let me post it>, I have also heard from Scott Snyder, Matt Deweese, Brian Rexford, Linda Signor, Tami Teichert, Kathryn Vokoviak, Shelia Hornburger, Barb Merlotti, Jeff Benscoter and many more, it has been REALLY cool to hear from all of them! So this is GOING to HAPPEN last wekend in July, come hell or high water! The Event has been set up at Noto's NOW....July 26 from 7:30PM-12:30AM...the cost is $63.00 pp. The cost includes, food, and drinks are included with ticket price for the FIRST 3 hours of the Event only, then it will be CASH BAR after that. I still miss Michigan and would love to come back and visit with you all! I have a grandmother who turns 96 this summer, I need to come back home for that and would love to see as many people as possible upon my return, so let's make a date NOW! Call me, I look forward to it!
