Connie's Story

Life I was married shortly after high school and had two children from my first marriage, but divorced after 20 years of marriage; Rhonda is 41 and Darren is 38...have four grandchildren - two boys and two girls: Bryan 20, Ethan 15, Haley 14, & Meaghan 13. I am currently married to a retired Navy Commander, of whom I am very proud...Just the "three" of us - Jerry, me and the cat. I do medical transcription from my home, and have worked for over 30 years for a group of orthopedic surgeons in the past, working in other capacities in addition to the transcription. Just recently I "semi-retired" from most of my doctors...just have one left at present -winding down. I have recently revised my "bio" here...Some of you know that I was taking care of my Mom who had Alzheimer's, but she lost her ten-year battle with the disease and passed away in June of 2005. My husband and I then "retired" and moved from the Bay Area where we had lived so long - moving to Lake County, CA. Getting older is an adventure in itself...the days go by so fast...not enough hours or "energy" to finish all I set out to do it seems. My children are living some distance from me, so I keep busy with emailing friends and relatives. Hubby and I are taking it easy...go on a few little jaunts every once in awhile. School It's too bad I couldn't be going to high school now because I think I'd appreciate it more, learn more and make less mistakes! I was always interested in anything to do with art...and did a lot of art work in those days, and was offered an art scholarship to San Francisco State...but turned it down because I WANTED TO GET MARRIED....I guess all things happen for the best...but I could have had the best of both worlds! I don't know that all kids really know what they want to do with their lives at that age...now, I could make some really good decisions, but I'm way past the ...Expand for more
age and health to be able to start all over again...hope some young person reads this...if you get an opportunity early on...run with it!!! Workplace After high school and then getting married, and one daughter later, I went to work for the Dept. of the Navy, the Military Pay Department in Treasure Island, San Francisco. Only worked there about a year though...too tough a schedule at the time for having a baby at home to take care of. It was a "cushy" job though... I worked for several different schools as a teacher's aide over the years...even worked at Dover School as an aide...strange seeing some of "our" old teachers still there. Finally I tired of working with children and decided to go to a medical training school to learn to work for doctors... I had read medical books for a hobby for over 15 years on my own (I know, weird hobby...payed off though). So I graduated from the school and worked for various physicians including two cardiologists and an internist in the Walnut Creek area...ending up working for a large group of orthopedic surgeons in Walnut Creek beginning about 1979... I worked in a lot of different capacities; everything from drawing blood, EKG's, lab work, front office, back office, transcription...all of it, but found I liked the front office better as time went on, then got started doing transcription there in the office. Later I moved my "whole show" to my home where I still work out of my own little home office. I stayed with the orthopedic group until they dissolved the original partnership in 2001. I still work for one of the doctor's who left the group...along with another local physician/attorney in private practice. After all these years, I'm happy to say that I enjoy my work...the type of work and the fact that I can EASE into retirement by working at home and getting used to it a little at a time...maybe I'll never retire, who knows!
