Gene's Story

During 2022, I gave leadership to creating a 434-page Time Capsule for the 1957 Burley High School Class. This was done in lieu of having our 65th reunion in 2022. It includes 36 life Summaries, 50+ Obituaries, Historical Overview of Trivia and Transitions (since 1940). Also included is some Burley area and schools history, plus many of our elementary, BHS pictures and the Life Updates/Pictures from six reunion booklets. Three copies were presented to BHS Principal Levi Power in Oct 2022. Two copies are in the high school library for use by students, counselors and teachers. The third copy is sealed and in the school vault for the clsss of 2032 to open and read our challenge to repeat this kind of Time Capsule for their 65th anniversary.. A public access copy is in the Burley Library. The '57 BHS Class had 123 graduates, but our official class count is 164. This includes those who were with us sometime in 9-12th grades. The Time Capsule not only reveals the great diversity of careers and life experiences, but the many places and countries where our classmates lived and worked. It also includes some very significant or unusual career experiences and accomplishments. All this makes for a very interesting read because the lives, careers and accomplishments of this class are mind boggling! Copies are available from the Burley Reminder for ~$40 and in Google Drive at: Volume 1_COMPLETE.pdf and Volume 2_COMPLETE.pdf Volume 1 is a large file. Google will indicate that it is too large to scan and ask if you still want to download it, so proceed through a few Google questions until it downloads. Volume 2 is a much smaller file and quicker to download. A couple of personal updates. This fall I was thrilled to finally shoot my age of 83 in golf after shooting four 84's earlier in 2022. Connie and I returned this fall to the beautiful U of Idaho Campus where I received the "International Achievement Award" from the College of Agricutural & Life Sciences, my undergraduate college. This award recognizes the leadership I gave to tripling UMN learning abroad enrollment through the "Curriculum Integration" model we created that became a national model for large universities. ed international undergraduate enrollment five-fold, which gives UMN students greater exposure to other cultures and expands global awareness. During my 43-year UMN career, I worked in 19 countries and contributed to numerous international projects and organizations, with major work in Australia, Morocco and China. I grew up on Snow View Angus Ranch in View southeast of Burley. In the 1950-60's, our ranch produced a number of champion bulls and heifers at shows and sales in Idaho & Oregon. I graduated from the Universities of Idaho and Wisconsin. After my PhD at UW, I completed a 12-month National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sydney, Australia doing research on fat metabolism in chickens that caused an egg defect. Connie, my spouse from Jerome, and I met at UI, were married as seniors and have two daughters--one was born in Wisconsin while we were in graduate school and the second during my postdoc in Australia. After Australia, we moved to Minnesota for my UMN position as professor of animal science and food science. I taught about 3600 students, advised many graduate students and became a Morse-Amoco Distinguished Professor, a major UMN honor. My lab research on animal growth biology, fat metabolism and meat quality was recognized with two national research awards. A major focus of my metabolism research was to decrease fat deposition and increase muscle mass in livestock species. Later, I served the UMN as a Dean, Vice President, Provost and finally as Associate VP for UMN International Programs. Details about my career are in my 1997 oral history interview. Google "UMN Oral History Interview of C. Eugene 'Gene' Allen." In 2009, I retired as Emeritus Dean and Morse-Amoco Distinguished Teaching Professor after a dream career of 43 years that involved four different UMN careers.. In 2020 I published my 340-page memoir, "Unexpected Adventures-Farm Kid to Professor." It was published by Lulu.com where if you google "C. Eugene Allen," or the title you will find it. Be careful that you don't confuse me with the famous White House Butler with the same name! Unfortunately, this website does not allow me to give the Lulu website that goes directly to my memoir!
