Conrad's Story
Life
We live near the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in Central California. It is lovely and peaceful here. Although we do have four seasons, it never gets cold enough to snow, and in general it is relentlessly sunny and pleasant. Sylvia and I were married at the Castillo Serralles in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 2002. We love to travel and recently took a cruise to the Mediterranean.
Workplace
Following my postdoctoral training in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal and Fetal Medicine, I worked in developmental neuroscience on the faculty of the Medical Schools of Columbia University and UCLA. My research focused on cerebral blood flow and metabolism in the fetus and the genesis of brain injury before birth.
I am now Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology for the University of California, San Francisco, Fresno Medical Education Program. We train medical students, interns, and residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology and provide complete general and subspecialty OB/Gyn care to a very diverse patient population including a large number of Asian and Hispanic patients. became the first in the United States to implement the STAN ST segment analysis fetal heart rate monitor, the most advanced fetal heart rate monitor in the world and the only one that has ever been shown to decrease the rate of fetal brain injury at birth.
Currently we are continuing to develop the largest high risk pregnancy program in the San Joaquin Valley as well as new initiatives in teen pregnancy, substance abuse during pregnancy, postpartum depression, anxiety disorders, and postpartum psychosis. In the gynecology arena, we are pioneering the use of the DaVinci surgical robot for general gynecologic and gynecologic cancer surgery in our region.
I am chairman of the California State March of Dimes Program Services Committee and serve on the State Board of Directors for the March of Dimes. Recently I have become involved in the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative, serving on the Statewide Maternal Mortality Review. We are studying all the maternal deaths in California in 2002 and 2003 in the hope that we can find ways to improve pregnancy outcomes and prevent these tragedies.
