Constance's Story

Life Thought I would go to college after high school graduation, but instead, married young, went to Grand View College part-time and had my two children by age 21 years. Thought I wanted to escape small town life for the big city of Des Moines. Owned a home interiors and flooring store for several years. After getting tired of working 24/7, I got interested in Human Services and went to college full time. First marriage ended and I continued going to college. I spent the rest of my career life in not-for-profit organizations trying to better the world and help mankind. Hope I did help in some small ways during my career. Worked in various capacities within these organizations in public relations, public & professional education, fundraising, volunteer management, and then CEO of various not-for-profit organizations. Some of the early organizations involved health-related issues like organ donation for transplantation and kidney disease care and prevention after our classmate and my dear friend, Patty Floyd Butler, died at such a young age from her kidney transplant complications. She was my inspiration as I loved her very much. Later work involved promoting business-education alliances to enhance education in the schools. During my working career, I was a single mom for a number of years so it was difficult at times for me to spread myself so thin, but I managed to raise two very fine children who are college graduates and now happily married with wonderful lives of their own so I must have done something right. During those single years, I also managed to have quite a bit of fun ...Expand for more
too. I think because I married so young and didn't date a lot as a teen, I had more fun as a single adult. Had a great group of interesting friends who exposed me to many new things.Learned to love dancing, sailboating, jazz, blues, the symphony, travel, cross-country skiing, and gourmet dining and cooking, etc. I guess I'm somewhat a free-spirit when it comes to exploring the world and that never stopped after I met a wonderful man who is now my second husband. We have been married now for twenty-three years and have a blended family with four children, two each. Retired several years ago. Have a townhome in Ankeny and winter in TX. For the last several years, have been caring for my husband who has been battling Stage IV Non Hodgkins Lymphoma at the top cancer center in the world. Although it has been very rough at times, we have persisted and he is still alive after several years so we are very pleased. He has now regained his weight and seems more energetic so we are making the most of our time together with family and with our special group of friends down south in Texas at a senior resort where we enjoy our self-made music, fine food, dancing, laughing, pool parties, etc. etc. We enjoy our eight grandchildren the most when we see them. They are very spread out...Norwalk, IA., Rockville, MD, and L.A. area. We love to travel. Am more actively pursuing my painting, textile arts, wood carving etc. Hope to go on an archeological dig soon. Love to dance and create my own clothing designs. Well, that's enough about my life. Hope to read and hear about all of you soon! Connie
