Dr. Sally's Story
I live in a beautiful restored (from 1861) home in the woods near Milton, DE. Essentially I have five families - all "adopted" or "surrogate". Although I bore no children, God has favored me with a beautiful family through my brother; a shared family of three children whom I helped to raise - and whose children include my Godson; my "surrogate" family "next door" through the woods for whom I am "mom", "mommom", and friend; my current young family who share my home: Jon and Tesa with daughters Madeleine (2) and Riley (6 mos.); and, Clovis (23)from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The young family had been living in a camper and moved in wth me as winter 2007 was approaching. They are now ready to move into their own home! I feel blessed to have Clovis, a pediatric nursing student from the Democratic Republic of Congo. His education is my gift to him, his wonderful Congolese family, and the people of Congo to whom he will return.
Having spent 37 years as a teacher, school and district administrator for Smyrna High School (7 years) and Cape Henlopen School District (30 years), I have recently completed courses at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary to become a Presbyterian Commissioned Lay Pastor. I do some supply pastoring in New Castle Presbytery and a great deal of mission work both in Guatemala and the Congo (...Expand for more
where I met Clovis.) It is thought that I will soon have a small traditional church and establish a second congregation for the very large Mayan and Latin American population in Sussex County.
As an ordained elder of my church (Westminster, Rehoboth Beach), I have many duties all of which I love. I am currently secretary of New Castle Presbytery's Committee on Ministry.
I was never on an airplane until 2005 when I went to Scotland with a group from my church. Since then I have worked in post-Katrina recovery in Pearlington, Mississippi; worked in post-mudslide (Hurricane Stan)recovery near Quetzaltenango (Xila), Guatemala; and, served as a missioner through our presbytery partnership in Kananga, Democratic Republic of Congo. In 2008, I helped to write the partnership agreement between our presbytery and the Mam Presbytery in Guatemala. (The Mam are a large branch of the Mayan people.)
This work represents a real lifestyle change for me as I spent many years as a student, teacher, administrator, and caretaker of children as well as my elderly parents (now deceased.) As always, I take loving care of my dogs.
I completed my undergraduate work at the University of Delaware in 1964 and later earned a Masters in Human Resources Management and a Doctorate in Education Leadership.
I would love to hear from you! Peace, Sally
