Cortez's Story

Life Meeting my wife(Marlne Glasco) in High School in 1977. We've been married for 26 years as of September 2008 and we've been together for 31 years. We have two wonderful daughters(Natesha and Cortaza). Our youngest daughter is also apart of the elite force(Marine Corporal)The Marine Corps. Our oldest daughter live in California with our granddaughter(Jarvia). We've traveled all over the world and it has been great. I'm looking forward to retiring after 30 yrs of service in 2010. Meeting people from all walks of life has been the best experiences. School Camden High was the best time I ever had in School. Coach Thames, Coach Simpson(deceased) and Coach Moore were the Biggest motivator at The High. The other coaches were good. Coach Rosenberg. They both believe in never quitting, because you will quit in life. We had many Teachers who gave us good advice. Thanks to all the Teachers during my time(1975-1979). The House Parties were crazy and the strike was better, because we were out of school for a while. I think any Teacher that survived Camden High deserve more (Hazardous)pay. The best sport programs. College I've never doubted myself of any of my accomplishment. I had some doubter at The High. I've completed my certification as a Journeyman Counselor through the Department of Labor September 2005. I finally completed my AA degree in General Studies at Central Texas College, Camp Pendleton, Ca August 2005. I'm proud that I've completed my BS in Criminal Justice at Columbia Southern University July 2007. Military I join the Marine Corps in March 4 1980. I graduated from Marine Corps Basic Training June 1980. I reported to Camp Lejuene July 1980. I went to Transportation Coordinator Crs at Ft Eustis, Va 1981. I was deployed to the Meditterrian for about 200-some days in 1981. We sat off the coast of Egypt when Prime Minister Anwar Sadat was assassin. President Reagan was on the USS Constellation. I was sent to Okinawa Japan from Dec 1983-Dec 1984. I was deployed to Team Spirit "83" with CSSD 33. I left Okinawa and report to 1st FSSG work at 14 Area Group. I re-enlisted and reported to MCB,Camp Lejuene. I left Camp Lejuene April 1987 and reported to San Diego, Ca Recruiter School. I graduated from Recruiter School June 1987. I reported to RS Albany, New York from 1987- May 1990. I was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant during this period. I was Recruiter Of The Year 1988. I received a Navy Achievement Medal for my performance. I was number one Recruiter leaving RSS Albany in May 1990. I was taught by the best and that was MGySgt Don Dolby. COIC Air Terminal SNCOIC of the Air Freight Section from July 1990 to July 1991. We received orders to Henderson Hall, Va in July 1991, because of medical issues. We received orders back to Iwakuni January 1993. I was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant February 1993. I became the Traffic Chief of Traffic Management Office. I coached/mentor kids at MC Perry Elementary School. I've coached Soccer, Basketball, Baseball. My daughters played for the teams I coached during this period. I coached women Softball during this period. My wife played softball on the team I coached. We reported to MCAS Beaufort, SC July 1996-July 1998. I was the Traffic Chief at that time. I coached kids sports during that period. We received orders back to Iwakuni Japan in July 1998. I was promoted to Master Sergeant April 1999. I played and Coached kids and Adults sports. We won a number of Championship in Basketball, Flag Football, and Softball. I was voted to the All Tournament softball team. Our daughters graduated from MCPerry 2002 and 2003. Both daughter played for MCPerry Basketball Team, VolleyBall Team, Tennis Team, Softball Team. Our youngest daughter was select to the all Far East Team in Basketball. We move back to the states in July 2003. I was promoted to Master Gunnery Sergeant June 2003. Our youngest daughter completed her first year at Marymount Univ in DC/Virginia. We reported to Camp Pendleton, CA 2003. Our youngest daughter join the Marine Corps in 2004 at Aviation Electronic Technician. Our oldest daughter got married to a Marine. Our oldest daughter gave birth to our first grandaddaughter. We received orders to Okinawa Japan July 2005. I presently station in Okinawa until August 2008. We have arrived at our last duty station. We're at Camp Pendleton for the last go round. We arrive July 2008 and I go on terminal leave 11 Dec 2009. If I get a good job before that I might have to move sooner. I will see in the next few months. On 4 December 09 my retirement ceremony was held at building 1160. It was one of the greatest day of my life. I enjoyed the last day in uniform with the Elite military in the world. I would like to give thanks to God for allowing me to grow from a boy to Man from Camden New Jersey. God has guided me throughout my career in the Marine Corps and Life itself. Thank My family and friends that could make it to the ceremony and those that couldn't make it. I'm proud to be from Camden New Jersey. I would like thank the Marine Corps leaderships for teaching me how to become successful in life. I would like to give thanks to the Class of 79 for who I am today. I'm venturing out to a new world and ready to make some adjustments to myself.
