Cortlandt Bellavance:

CLASS OF 1960
Mansfield, MA
Boston, MA

Cortlandt's Story

Life After high school graduation in 1960, I had worked with my father in Attleboro for three years in the Art Department of the costume jewelry firm, Robbins Company. After that, I had worked one year at our once summer home in West Dennis, Mass. in a silkscreen shop, Screencraft, as an artist in training. Decided to go to college. Graduated from Massaschusetts College of Art in 1964 with a B.S. in Art Education. Taught one year at Billerica, Mass and went on to graduate school, University of Massachusetts, in Amherst earning a MFA in Printmaking in 1971. Went on to NJ to teach at Atlantic Cape Community College (near Atlantic City) and post graduate studies at Rutgers University, eventually became an Associate Professor and Department Chair, retired after 32 years in 2002. While there I had taught a variety of Arts and Humanities courses in a variety of delivery modes: traditional lectures, television, and online. To a lesser degree, I had participated in some local and statewide art exhibitions. I have been married twice, have three children, two grown up boys and one twenty year old daughter. My firstborn, Jesse graduated from Salisbury State College in Maryland with a B.S. in Geographic Studies and the University of West Virginia with a Masters Degree in Geography, and now lives and works in Virginia as a GPS Mapmaker for the government. My stepson, Ramin, graduated from Columbia College, NYC, with a B.A. in Liberal Arts, turned to banking and computer software development, now is working for software research company in Pennsylvania and completing a MBA at LaSalle University. My only daughter, Jennifer, is currently a junior at University of Vermont, seeking both B.S in History (Social Studies) for the Secondary Teaching level and a M.A. in History in a five year dual track. She is also taking a minor in Holacaust and Genocide Studies. Home for the summer, she is currently serving as a substitute teacher at Atl...Expand for more
antic City High School until it gets out for the summer. My current and LAST wife (whew!) for over 24 years, Cynthia, is an English as a Second Language teacher at Atlantic City High School. She graduated from American Univesity and had attended Columbia College as well. Before our marriage, she had spent time in Iran teaching English to the F-16 pilots and mechanics during the reign of the late Shah. She is quite the linquist, she speaks Spanish, French, German, and Farsi (the principle language of Iran). Upon my retirement, I spend much of my time reading, and doing many household chores, (I have become a hausfrau, alas, no apron), doing art work, and academically guiding my last college graduate, Jennifer. Also, my family and I spend many hours at out beach house in Margate, New Jersey. I am still short, walk with a slight limp, and wear glasses. Since my college days, I have always worn a beard, now it helps to compensate for the thinning hair at the top. I have visted Mansifield two times since graduation and several times online. And, it has dramatically changed; it has become the typical and dynamic yuppiefied, sleeper town for the folks in Beantown. Wow! Certainly not the one-factory town when I had left. Is it the same for Foxboro? No grandchildren as of yet, but soon to be. I am waiting for Jesse and his wife to fly to Beijing, China within the next few months to adopt a young girl. I have rarely contacted anyone from Mansfield since leaving, and I have not attended any of the class reunions. Perhaps the 50th in 2010 if there is one planned. If one is planned, I would like to be notified here. Also, I would like very much to hear from any member of the graduating class of 1960. Since I have not been in touch with almost any member of the class for nearly fifty years, it would be most interesting and very appreciative to have some sense of closure about each of you Thanks! Best wishes to all.
