Courtney's Story

After high school, I went to a small all girls college where riding horsing was the main objective, since I was scared of horses my grandma was hoping I would marry a VMI cadet like my Uncle who passed away (as it turns out close to same age and same way-car accident as my oldest son) fooled her though- came home played around a lot at the uptown and french quarter-somewhat Punk bars (had enough of Frat boys from W&L and Georgetown. Did meet a Loyola boy who was kind of alternative rock and a little punk rock- earring and big combat boots- who FOR THE RECORD is now a straight laced attorney who would die of embarrassment now if anyone knew he had an his ear pierced and wore dangling crosses and skulls. I was going to UNO and working at All American Jeans at Clearview Mall- anyone remember that store?, back when the mall had 3 or 4 customers a day, I did both of those things haphazzardly for about 10 yrs majoring mostly in art- with all the different classes I took I probably could of gotten a degree in History, English and Art, but.....Math and Science kicked my butt- also during that time I married my Loyola boy and had my first son, a beautiful red head on Halloween no less, after my husband graduated Loyola with a History degree, and realized you couldnt get a job unless you wanted to be a teacher, he went law school and I quit my going nowhere job to get another going nowhere job as recptionist/tech at a Drs office- that paid more. I worked with one of our former classmates for a few years-Ericka Isreal. Then after my husband graduated and got job for a few years working as an asst DA for Harry Connick he moved out to Jefferson Parish to work as a public defender and start his own practice (where he is basically his only employee, but happy and also very good at it in society containing an overabundance of lawyers and that is important-the happy part, too many work too hard and make too much money but don't enjoy and never see their families so what is the point) as a public defender he gets some high profile cases (one I wont mention but he is on the news a lot.) I could of gone back to school then but decided to have a bunch of babies instead (3 more- 1997 a girl-Madeline, 1998 a girl- Caroline, 1999 - a boy Joseph -who we call Jake) then we decided to do what all the kids my husband grew up with did and buy our house in the same neighborhood they grew up in -within walking distance of St Benilde Catholic church ( I never became Catholic- I will always be Episcopalian-whichis so similliar anyway, but will probably always go to the Catholic Church ...Expand for more
since husband and all my kids are) and school were my older son already went, then he went to Rummel (unfortunately only 8th grade until 11th when he passed away) when my son was in 8th grade my oldest daughter started St Benilde( when she hits 7th grade we will have had a child there consistently for 18 yrs, about this time we discovered the youngest two were autistic and started early intervention therapy, and I could no longer work, I spend a lot of time running the older one to dance, drama and singing- she is a member of the Jefferson Childrens Choir- JPAS, luckily the younger ones who are kow 8 and 9 are in a good program at Ella Dolhnonde Elementary school- also right down the street- Caroline who is a year old is making progress, but Jake is slower, but we are still hoping, both of them sleep poorly if not at all at night, so when, everyone is in school I sleep- getting a job is not an option I need to be on call at all times (when I sleep I have my cell phone on the pillow next to my ear) to pick someone up who is sick or melting down- to give their school credit they can take care of most things, but for some reason with autism kids suffer a lot of medical problems which seems to be connected to the overall picture. Luckily after school and during the summer I have a sitter 5 hrs a day during the week so when I am not schlepping Madeline around I can sleep also ( or run errands) I am so glad Madeline has never had any desire to do sports I don't think I could fit trips to Cleary Playground into my schedule, or at least I appreciate not having to. Over the years at St Benilde I have run into a few former classmates from 1980 til 1984. Sherry Bulligan 1983 who was once married to Herman Doubleday 1985(?) had a daughter in my Mother-in-law's class (she was a third grade teacher a few years while my oldest went there) Jeannine Chauvin 1983 (Thibodeaux) had a son in Madelines class until 3rd grade- I never went to the reunions because they were always the same weekend as St Benildes fair- but that has been changed so maybe if there is a 25th I can make it. But Jeannine always told me about them. Mike Judge who was class of 1980 - I think- and his wife Holly who was 1984 with Mikes Brother Kevin ( who sadly also passed away) and my friends Beth Wood, Robert Gassiot and Gwen Tucker who I still keep up with. Have a son a year behind my Madeline- who was in Willy Wonka Jr with her and did an excellent job as Mike TeeVee- Well that is my story up until now- a lot of ups, more downs and quite an adventure- And still married to same guy for 21 years!!
