Craig's Story

Class of January, 1966. Hello, all my Cooley High mates (and teachers and staff). My wife, Robin, and I have been together for 44+ years since getting married at the beginning of our junior year at Michigan State. I graduated in physics, Robin in psychology. We have one child, a daughter, Lara, who is now 41 and a human resource person with Aetna Insurance living with her husband in Wichita, Kansas. I'm still working, as a contractor with the Region 8 office of the Environmental Protection Agency in downtown Denver. To go back to the beginning…following graduation from MSU, my first job in 1970 was as a field engineer with a Sperry Corp. division in Newport News, Virginia working on Poseidon submarines. When I was offered an optional assignment to a submarine tender in Holy Loch, Scotland we decided (1974) to follow the rest of my family to the Denver area where my parents moved when my dad retired from the Detroit police department. (My brothers, Bruce and Brian, are still in the Denver area, also.) For lack of anything else available, I immediately tried selling life insurance – I wasn’t sufficiently ruthless, so that only lasted three months. I then worked for Univac (now Unisys) in Denver for nine years in computer hardware. In late 1983 I hired on with AT&T at a large datacenter in Aurora (outside Denver). (During this time I took up some martial arts and, over four years, got a second dan in taekwon do. ) Then, due to “consolidation” we were transferred in 1991 to Maitland, Flo...Expand for more
rida to a product engineering group. I enjoyed the “balmy” weather (and the rains), but Robin couldn’t tolerate the humidity (just like Michigan!). So, when due to further “consolidation” and a serious (#1) layoff threat in early 1994, we moved back to Denver. With the job market not so promising, I was fortunate to hire on with a large defense contractor, Science Applications International Corp. with the Department of Defense where I remained until 1998. Then, due to another (#2) layoff threat, I got a job with the Boulder office of IBM, again in computer hardware. Before and during this time I went back to school ’94-’98 and ’01-’05 getting two graduate degrees at the University of Denver. Then, in early 2005, due to yet another (#3) layoff threat, still at IBM, I got the job where I am now at the EPA, which is rather semi-retirement since it’s only four days per week – and much less stressful than the I/T jobs. So, that’s it in a nutshell for a 43-year career. (I’ve never used the physics, per se.) I’d like to continue working for at least another five years; my health remains good (although I had a hemicolectomy in 2008) and I enjoy what I'm doing. I remember my Cooley High days with great memories: concerts, singing, senior class activities. Little did I realize that I would never see many friends following graduation day. We all go our own ways, don't we. Best wishes, and good health, to all. I’d love hearing from anyone. Craig Grimm - Centennial, Colorado, May 15, 2013.
