Craig's Story

I left Pomona and stayed with my parents working at part time and odd jobs (Master Model maker, Photo Processing, picking down kits at Frostline). I trained in Troy, OH and went to work at Hobart Corporation where my dad worked for 27 years. I got to work on commercial food equipment for almost 2 years (some KitchenAid repairs too) and right after that I came out to my parents for the first time. It wasn't received well at the time. My Mom was a Methodist and my Dad was a catholic so they told me it was only a phase... I would get "better", just date some girls! I got tired of my last job at Chad Manufacturing in East Denver so I quit and moved to L.A. to live with my sister Brenda and her boyfriend (now husband) Will. All that jewelry making I did in the basement (never worked in fast food through high school, made too much money making jewelry) came in handy when I got a job in the San Fernando Valley doing jewelry work for a small chain of three stores starting in 1982. Left there in 1985 and worked for a jewelry manufacturer for two years until I couldn't stand L.A. anymore (got chased down the freeways several times and had to sleep with my gun...) it just got too stressful. I moved up the coast to Lompoc, CA to work for a small retailer doing custom work and repairs. I won the AGTA Spectrum Award in 1990 and left that small store to be hired at Serengeti West as the jewelry designer. During those times up until 1988 I dated five psycho red-headed girlfriends in a row because I'm a glutton for punishment, and I had to find the one that would turn me straight. Didn't work. In 1998 when a free "monk kit" that came in the mail (no relationship for 10 years, it comes automatically) came an eaten-out stomach lining, depression and suicidal tendencies. My dad had been struck by a cement truck doing 60 and had brain damage. My mom was having...Expand for more
problems and dealing with him. My sister had become a christian that gave my dad stuff to read. Everything was getting too weird; something was wrong. I told my psychiatrist on my last session with her that I had been out of the closet once before but my parents had chased me back in. She suggested that might be my problem... You Think? I came out of the closet again on August 28th, 1998 then met Jim at the beach. We had a few dates, he was very funny and couldn't stop staring at me. He moved into my condo on Sept. 9th, 1998. My dad passed away the day before my birthday in 1999. I bought us the house we (I?) have now in 2003 in Arroyo Grande, CA twenty minutes south of San Luis Obispo approx. five minutes from the beach. It's a nice home, two floors, 2850 sq. feet in a really beautiful neighborhood. We bought the house because I run the local Central Coast Men's Potluck Group email list (175 guys) and would often have parties of 80-100 people in our home. My mom (who was living with my sister) passed away in April of 2005. Those potluck friends have become quite helpful in the past few months, as Jim got sicker from his Congestive Heart Failure and was waiting for a heart transplant at Stanford medical Center in S.F., they were around to support us. Jim's health took a turn for the worst before the 4th of July weekend and our local Gay Pride Celebration. He passed away on July 29th, 2008 and the house is very big and lonely now. I am keeping myself busy with work and friends, plus taking care of our two kids (cats); Miss Kazza Jane Marie & Folsom. If anyone wants to talk, please contact me. I was in a daze through High School... I can't say I remember much. Only those who were nice to me. And the one guy it art class that knocked my Baldar Conehead "cone" off my skull with a roll of tape. He's probably in prison now. I can only hope.
