Craig's Story
Hey to all. My story briefly is post high school I worked at dopey jobs for a year and a half to earn money to travel , then travelled around Europe for six months, then traveled overland (you still could then) through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India to Nepal, being gone for a year. Came back and studied classical guitar and sold gas for Chevron in Santa Rosa, then moved up to Olympia Washington and went to the Evergreen State College for four years, studying European Cultural history, art and more guitar. Graduated in 1980, married my girlfriend, and started working with older adults at a Nursing home then and Adult day health center. Got divorced (ouch!), went to graduate school in social work at the University of Washington, graduating in 1987. Kept working with the elderly, now for the City of Seattle.

urning from Nepal, I had been practicing Zen Buddhism with Shasta Abbey, a monastery in Mt. Shasta, California. During those years the practice of Buddhism got more and more important while the regular things of life got less and less important to me. Eventually these lines crossed, I felt I really needed to do what deeply felt to be the best thing I could see to do with this short life, and I move to Shasta Abbey in 1990, getting ordained the next year. I've been here ever since, through thick and thin, greatness and hardness, still feeling like this is the best thing I can do, even when it is hard, The Univ. of Washington did a piece on myself and 3 other UW grads who are monks here, go to
