Craig's Story

Putting myself through college took a while, but I graduated in 73 with a civil engineering degree from UW Platteville, Wisconsin. I already had 3 years of technical engineering field experience developing the Elk Grove and Shaumburg areas so getting a job after graduation was easy. Plus that I was married and had a 3 week old daughter helped. Jane and I have been married 43 years, have 3 kids and 5 grandkids. Beth is a struggling artist, Ben owns his own machine manufacturing business and Brian is a professional chef. After living in rural Wisconsin, returning to Chicago was never an option. Civil consulting, mainly water supply and wastewater treatment were my area. I worked in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and UP Michigan. I was principal engineer at Davy Engineering Co., Lacrosse, WI. It was at Davy that my design and successful operation of the Elk Mound, Wisconsin WWTP won the first plac...Expand for more
e national EPA excellence award in 1995 for small advanced wastewater treatment facilities, the highest award I can achieve in my field. I left Davy to become a major stock holder and vice president of Cooper Engineering Co., Rice Lake, Wisconsin, one of Wisconsin's largest civil consulting firms. I semi retired at 60 and started my own firm, Birchwood Engineering, doing free lance engineering for friendly competitive firms, finally retiring in 2012. Jane and I live on a wilderness lake chain north of Birchwood, WI. We like hiking, canoeing and kayaking. We have a second home in Ontonagon MI. just off of Lake Superior (I am currently looking at a 32 ft. Chris-Craft). We winter in Harlingen, TX. I would like to pull our trailer through the New England states if we could find the time. Still like fast cars. Had a Jaguar XKE for 17 years that I drove cross country twice. Was quite the fixture at job sites.
