Susan's Story

Taking lead from a Classmates question . . . My first work was babysitting for neighbors around our home on Melwood Drive in Glendale. I got paid $5.00 an hour to babysit (good pay for a kid in the early 70s). I made more than $350 one Summer and spent it all on clothes and birthday presents. My second job (now legal working age) was at a neighborhood drug store in Costa Mesa, CA, where I earned my way up to working in the pharmacy as a clerk. And, I was able to decorate the display cases at the front of the store. In 1976, my boyfriend (of 2-1/2 years by then) got me a job at an insurance company and I worked there a little more than two years until just after we broke up. I then went to work as a clerk at Accent Interiors on Balboa Island, CA, I gave my little brother Bill his second job there. He would ride his bike (previously has a paper route, so trained). He travelled a pretty long way (5 miles?) to get there from Costa Mesa, bless his heart. I enrolled at Interior Designer's Guild in Newport Beach for professional design classes. The art history class was extremely interesting because the teacher was so well-versed. One field trip was The Getty Museum in Malibu and he joined my carpool and talked to us most of the way. I also started working as a make-up artist for Bonne Bell Cosmetics a few days a week and did shows in three local counties' (Orange, Los Angeles, San Diego) department stores to sell their product. I was really good at it and was top salesperson. With that, I started lecturing via Bonne Bell at high schools on how health is involved in the beauty routine. I also started a modelling workshop for Bonne Bell at the Broadway department stores. (My mom had been a model in San Francisco in about 1958-61 after her first divorce and trained me in the following years.) I guess I worked for BB for less than two years when they discontinued the make-up artist program. I finally decided to get a college degree and had saved enough money to put myself through. Work experience program in college led me to the Accounting Department at Carol Eichen Interiors in Orange County, CA. Also, during college years, I worked as a hostess/waitress at Oliver's (fine dining) and inventory/sales at The Showplace South, a new interior design showroom that my school friend's mother owned (and still owns, though he passed away in the 80's). I was working two part-time jobs and schooling with a full course load until I graduated in 1982. I played tennis, jogged every day, and ate healthy (a lot of stir-fry and tea in college days). Sometimes, I'd go to McKormick's Landing, a restaurant on the airstrip on the John Wayne Airport (SNA) and do my homework after the diners were fading. On breaks, I would go downstairs to the bar/dancing area and dance for a while. At the end of studying, I'd go back downstairs for a glass of wine and read a magazine and dance. (Hint: Don't read books or magazines in a bar because some people will get mad and ridicule you or think you're rude. LOL). The owners of the restaurant were really nice. In about 1982, I started modelling locally in Orange County and was introduced to Beautex Magazine where I went behind the scenes of the ramp shows and beauty contests. I remember one show we planned, the photographer cancelled at the last minute. I found another really fast (that already knew my boss Antoine, so it was) when I was out dancing that night and happened to meet a photographer and his girlfriend. We did the models' photoshoot the next day of all the beauties to be in the contest. Then, the night of the show, after taking tickets at the door, Antoine told me I was also going to be IN the contest. They gave me a fancy dress to wear and I won 4th place! Whew ! Eventually, the work experience courses during college brought me to the law field and I worked with attorneys for the next 18 years. I think my favorite work activity in the law office was digesting depositions, but I enjoyed much of the work given me. Eventually, they asked me to help manage a law office, but I consulted only and performance increased 30%. Then, the global law firm of Baker and McKenzie asked me to open a satellite office for them in Orange County, CA. That also included doing some interior design of the office and writing manuals for the support staff and paralegals I injured my back in 2001, falling from a tree in the park with a friend. d working at home where I could make my own hours and try to heal. I had net worth of about half a million at that time with all the good investments I made over the years, so stress was not a factor of my healing process. I transcribed and digested (a Paralegal word) patient interviews by a Psychologist for his workers' comp claimants and helped him prepare the lengthy reports to be given to their attorneys for trial. While doing that, I also continued with the Philharmonic Design House charity work I'd been involved with since 1992. It was a good way to feel happy. I had more interior design training in 1992, at Interior Designer's Institute in Newport Beach , CA and started doing a little interior design work, table top design, party planning and decorating, etc. I was also a Notary, so kept that up and got certified to do mortgage signings. Eventually, I thought it would be good to get my real estate license and did that in 2007 (and got alot of advice to get out of it before I started, too). Pretty scary economy. Trying to keep the faith. Oh, yeah, I don't have any kids because of endometriosis medical problem, miscarriaiges, tubal pregnancy. It's more dangerous because of my O negative blood. And, sad. Yet, I had more time to work then, huh? And, I helped friends with their kids. Love them. Had a few long relationships (one on and off from 1983 to about 2000), but never got one to the altar. We still talk, though seldom, and they are dear to me. I was always monogomous minded and dated one man at a time. Had a few marriage proposals from men that were just my friends ! LOL. Now, I'm kind of an old hoot, but no one suffered during my menopause. Kind of wish I had a loving husband, but haven't searched. My relationships were as good as marriage without the ring? I'll probably never know. So, can't share stories there. Maybe I will be blessed to get married one day. I prefer not living alone but never lived with my boyfriend. I always had a roommate though, even after I bought my own homes. These days, I spend my time gardening and keeping up the house. I play piano and sing when there is time. I write articles and poetry. And, I try to find time to research my geneaology. I work as a Realtor and Interior Designer, I study real estate and interior design updates, belong to local charity groups, drink wine, visit with friends (movie nights are fun!), and often watch Classic Arts Showcase tv when I'm supposed to be falling asleep after Jay Leno and David Letterman. Oh, GIVE BLOOD, friends. Please. I've been doing that since a gal friend passed from luekemia in the late 70's. It is easy (if your body allows) and takes less than an hour every 56 days. It might even be healthy for you. And, sometimes, the blood banks give you perks for donating. I got two baseball tickets one time to watch the Storm baseball team (stadium in the city I live right now). I enjoy watching baseball, but don't follow stats on anyone in particular. I have been playing "powder puff" tennis with some other old gals around here, but just for exercise and not competition. We count how many times we get the ball over the net rather than how many times we win the serve. We're pretty good, but probably boring to watch unless you can hear us. I think we usually get it over the net 17 times before someone misses. The County built a nice little park at the end of my street at the lake's shore and it's a real nice walking area. I try to walk every day, but not too much at one time or my hip goes out! At my age, having minor medical problems are much more normal than before. Thanks goodness for my good chiropractor. I still have dreams I don't think I can reach, but want to try. Anyway, I hope this economy turns around. And, I pray we all feel safe and loved. I hope everybody wakes up smiling and gets their "goin' on" also. Thanks to all those that helped me through the years. I haven't done so bad ! Time to update my story to include a terrible auto accident in January 2009 (a lady talking on a cellphone and speeding rear-ended me), and my Cancer operation in May 2012 (and I am now Cancer-free). And, after missing three payments on my home near the shore of Lake Elsinore (my third home, actually), I had to put it up for a "short sale." It sold in two days ! I had to downsize from 1400 square feet to about 250 square feet (and a storage facility). lol Not easy to do.
