Curtis's Story

Life What's happened since 1970? Hummm..... I left Alaska after graduation and started college at Ole Miss, where I was majoring in accounting. I worked a lot of odd jobs (not that they were particularly "odd" jobs, just several different ones). In 1971, I married my high-school sweetheart (I say she followed me, but the truth of the matter is that her father retired to a farm not far away. I dropped out of college, and moved to Memphis, where I went to work for Hunter Fan Company as a timekeeper. While working there, a concrete formwork (construction) company out of Ft. Lauderdale hired me as a payroll accountant for a construction project in Memphis at the time. In 1973, they moved me to Ft. Lauderdale when they finished their Memphis job. In 1975, during one of the biggest recessions during the 70s, I joined the Florida Highway Patrol. I worked as a state trooper for the next nine years, divorced, and then finished my batchelor degree in accounting (see what a divorce can do for you? LOL) Before leaving FHP, I meet my future second wife and eventually moved to Tallahassee. Since 1984, I've lived in Tallahassee where I married for the second time (this one did follow me). I now work as an analyst for the Florida Legislature (known in polite and not-so-polite circles as OPPAGA). Essentially, we evaluat...Expand for more
e policies and programs for the Florida legislature and recommend more economical, efficient, and effective use of resources. I've been with the Legislature since 1986. In 1987, I received a master of public administration degree from Florida State University (FSU), concentrating my graduate studies in program evaluation and quanititative methods. In 2001, I enrolled in FSU's PHD program, but work and travel kept me out of town most of the time and I had to indefinitely postpone that program (I don't "drop out" anymore -- LOL). In 2002, I divorced again. Still, I think I'm getting better at this marriage-thing. My first lasted about six years, with an interlude of about 12 years before my second. My second lasted about 12 years. My next? Who knows. Maybe there'll be one, maybe not. However, if past performance is any indication: it could last anywhere from 18 or 24 years, depending upon whether you count by increments of six (i.e., 6, 12, 18) or of doubles (i.e., 6, 12, 24). Don't mind me, it's that quantitative methods training kicking in. LOL In 2005, I'll reach another milestone (or will that be a plateau?): I'll complete 30 years of services with the State of Florida. I'll be eligible to retire then, but don't know if I will. I'll first need to figure out what I want to do when I grow up.... LOL
