Houston, TX Martial arts instructor. Started training in 1970 at 7 years old in Japanese Ju Jitsu until about 13 years old...then moved to traditional Japanese Karate (Seito Ryu) until I was 18. In 1981, I met a Chris Long and trained with him for a few years, and through Chris I met Jerry Poteet. I feel Jerry changed my martial arts life more than probably anyone else I've met because he opened a door that had been closed before then. I only got to train with Jerry when he came to Houston to hang out with my friend Chris, but he would normally stay for several weeks at a time, and even then I only had the chance to train with hi...Expand for more
m for a few hours while he was here. Along with the concepts and techniques I learned from him, and the techniques he taught Chris and Chris passed to me...Jerry suggested I find a good Wing Chun instructor and a good Boxing coach. Which I did. He also opened a door to Guru Dan Inosanto, who opened a door to GT Leo Gaje, which opened doors to other Filipino Kali instructors. Through Guru Dan, I was also introduced to several Muay Thai instructors and Indonesian Silat teachers. I had the honor of training with Bob Bartlett...who played tackle for the Bronco's for a while and was also a 3 time world heavyweight PKA champion. I had several PKA fights back in the early to mid 80's here in Texas and through those I fought with, met other martial arts instructors. Now...after almost 4 decades of martial arts training, I have instructor certifications in Shito Ryu karate, the 5 Animal Styles of kung fu, Kodan Kan Ju Jitsu, Wing Chun kung fu, Indonesian Silat, Filipino Kali/Arnis/Escrima, Tae Kwon Do, Muay Thai kickboxing, and as of Nov. of '09 a coach's certification under Erik Paulson in Combat Submission Wrestling. I've had many instructors and teachers in my life time. My mother and father...my grand parents...my martial arts instructors and my friends. But I would say that person I've learned the most from over my life, has been my son Jonathan. He taught me how to be a father.".
